US venture BroadQ LLC unveiled a software application that enables the PlayStation 2 (PS2) to play video content on the Internet at "Building Blocks 2008," a content- and technology-related event that is taking place in San Jose, Calif.

The company demonstrated the software, "Qtv," for the first time at the event, it said.

In 2002, BroadQ released "QCast for the PlayStation 2," another software application that enables the PS2 to play content (image, video and music files) that users have stored on their PCs and other devices. To develop Qtv, the company redeveloped QCast from scratch, adding the capability to play Internet video, etc, it said.

"The PS2 has sold 125 million units all over the world, continuing to sell even now," BroadQ said. "We consider the PS2 as an influential hardware platform,"

Qtv can process up to 720p resolution videos, supporting video encoding technologies including MPEG2, FLV (Flash Video), H.264 and DivX. To make the software support those video encoding technologies, BroadQ employed a technology developed by CoreCodec Inc of the US.

The Qtv system uses a server run by BroadQ along with the software on the terminal side. Using this server, the software can download and build up necessary metadata through online video distribution services and make Qtv display information on available online videos.

In addition to these capabilities, users can customize Qtv. For example, while using API (application programming interface) available from online video distributors, users can set keywords related to their favorite videos on the Website run by BroadQ. Using the company's system, users can choose and display videos related to those keywords on their terminals.

BroadQ is planning to release Qtv at US$49.95 sometime around fall 2008. Also, it is planning to disclose and sell its software applications for mobile phones and PCs at the same time. In addition to selling the software by itself, the company is considering incorporating its software applications in set top boxes and other items manufactured by other companies.

    News from Play Asia:

Welcome to this week's Games Update, our weekly summary featuring all new product arrivals from the last seven days.

Interesting products that came in this week are mostly RPG and strategy games. The Tales of series has made its debut on the third generation consoles via Tales of Vesperia [standard and Super Premium pack version].

With a new upgraded real-time battle system and HD graphics, you can experience the old school RPG in a refreshingly new way.

Transform yourself into a summoner wherever you are via your Nintendo DS in Summon Night 2. Summoners have brought chaos to a once utopian world, and your people are now wary of your special powers. Through your journey, show the world that you are using your powers for the good of the people and not for corruption.

Fire Emblem is also revived on Nintendo's newest handheld system. Prince Marus made himself famous for being one of the strongest player characters in Mario Smash brothers and redirects some of the attention he recieves to his own series which has been laying low for a long while.

Make use of your Nintendo DS functions to plan out how to reclaim your country, in the revival of this completely new game.

Start out by reclaiming your lands in Fire Emblem and move on to conquering the whole continent in Spectral Force 3. At the death of the late emperor, you are entrusted with leadership and the fate to unify Neverland under yourself.

Since this week is largely about military strategy games, we cannot miss Sangokushi Taisen Ten [standard or bundle pack versions].

The card game is based on its arcade predecessor and this portable version comes with new card(s) drawn by famous illustrators or manga artists such as Clamp.

Learn how to direct military matters from the warriors and highly acclaimed strategists from the era of Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Everybody starts off their journeys at some point and Marl Oukoku no Ningyou Hime is a good point to start your journey in RPGs. The battle system is simple and the game eases you gently into its fun through its use of music. Take a break from the excitement and just relax to the beat of the songs.

A good RPG excel in all sorts of elements aside from gaming and strategy, and Final Fantasy, one of the best RPG series in gaming history has it all. The music producer Nobuo Uematsu joined forces with talented DJs from Tokyo, US and Europe and produced a Club remix disc.

Back in the NES days, Japanese companies were making games and cartoons based on U.S. properties - Think of DuckTales on the game side, or Batman the Animated Series on the cartoon side. But times have changed! Witness the Japanese localization of the Speed Racer game, made by Western studios, based on a Western movie, based on a Japanese IP. The times, they are a-changin!

Bazix is the Dutch company that was responsible for Woomb.net, which I've mentioned a few times. That was the place where you could legally download and play MSX games, many of which were translated into English for the first time. Bazix planned to release D4's one-chip MSX (which plays all MSX games in a tiny package) in the West, conforming with European laws. Unfortunately, Bazix has run into some troubles, and is no longer able to bring the system to the West, and is shutting down Woomb.net, besides. The Wikipedia article says the MSX Association has already found solutions to the distribution problem, but their official site is down, so it's kind of hard to tell what's going on now...more as it develops.

This week Microsoft released a very minor Xbox 360 dashboard update. They said that there were no new features and this was to help insure the future growth of the system and Xbox Live. Now this is intentionally vague but if you read the tea leaves a bit it might shed a light about their plans running into the fall and holiday 2008 video game shopping season.

I suspect that this most recent dash update might just add a list of new servers for first logging into the Xbox Live service. If you listen to E on the last episode of the Major Nelson podcast he said that his team at Xbox Live is getting ready to work their tails off an add servers and network infrastructure. Xbox Live does this when they expect they are going to have a big new number of sales of new Xbox hardware. They have occasionally done this around the launch of GTA IV size games to insure that the Xbox Live service does not get overwhelmed again like it did in December 07/ January 08.

There is the rumored price cuts expected to happen on September 7th. They are probably going to sell a lot of consoles for that. This update might be to get Xbox Live ready for the sales jump they expect when they lower the price of the Xbox with a 60 Gig Hard Drive to $299 and drop the cost of the Xbox 360 Arcade to $199.

Also the Jasper motherboard based Xbox 360s are due almost the same time. So the first week or so of September is going to be a very interesting time for Xbox.

Plus there is Madden 09, Fable 2 and RockBand 2 coming soon.
