Many of you might have read about a purported internal Microsoft strategy document that apparently "leaked" earlier this week, outlining its plans for the next Xbox system. The 56-page-long screed, dated August 2010, presciently mentioned Xbox SmartGlass, as well as Blu-ray support, 3D glasses, a focus on cloud-based gaming and a newly-improved Kinect system. Some news outlets ran the story, while others cried "fake!" claiming it didn't fit with Microsoft's traditional internal communications style and that some of the technical details within were borderline preposterous.Head on over to The Verge's report and you can attempt to make your own mind up.We held back and reached out to Microsoft for comment on the document's veracity a few days ago. Finally, a response has come through. A spokesperson for the platform holder wouldn't confirm or deny whether the document is legitimate but did offer us the following statement:"We understand there is great interest and anticipation for what comes next for Xbox and we are lucky to have customers who are so passionate about the platform."Today, there has never been a better time to own an Xbox 360 console. We have found new ways to extend the console lifecycle by introducing controller-free experiences with Kinect and we've re-invented the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships."We are continually thinking about the future of the platform and when we have something to share, we will."

Nintendo of America VP of sales and marketing Scott Moffitt has spoken out again on the challenges Nintendo faces portraying the Wii U's unique appeal.
"There were two things we realized going into E3: one, that we had too much content and info to share in one press event; second, we know that Wii U is a more complicated story and it takes some explaining to do to have consumers fully embrace it," Moffitt told Gamespot."It's confusing relative to the Wi," he added. "With motion control gaming, when you saw Mr. Iwata and Reggie stand up and swing a motion controller, it brought it to life immediately. With a second screen controller, you need to see what's on the second screen, so by nature it's a more complex system. It's less visually easy to understand.
"As for how we're planning to make it clear that it's a new system: well, we want to get it in people's hands. That's what E3 is all about and from now until launch. We want consumers to experience it for themselves, whether it's in a store, at a gaming event, or at a press event. Once they do that, I think people will really start to understand how the GamePad changes the way you can connect with games and other players."
This reflects recent statements from Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata, who admitted that, "On the stage [at E3] we couldn't fully explain what's so unique about our product

If one of the aims of the Raspberry Pi was to embody the "do-it-yourself" ethos, then it's already succeeded. Annoyed at the wait for the education-friendly board to arrive, the anonymous creator of the Gooseberry decided to build their own. Looking reasonably similar to its inspiration, it's packing a 1GHzAllWinner CPU, 400MHz Mali GPU, 512MB RAM and 4GB of onboard storage. It'll go on sale in the UK for £40 ($63) shortly, running Gingerbread and is capable of running HD video -- as demonstrated by the video we've got for you after the break.

Here’s [FlorianH's] setup for driving a PlayStation Portable screen with an FPGA. He’s using the DE0-Nano board to do this, and the first order of business was to establish a way to connect the two. He did a great job of etching his own breakout board, which has some traces that are less than 10 mils thick. Soldering the connectors for the screen was a bit of a challenge, and he shared several pictures of the process for your enjoyment.
With everything hooked up he fired it up with just a couple of lines of code to draw a test pattern. From there it was on to building a more intensive driver. [FlorianH] mentioned to us that he’s just starting to learn about FPGAs after having worked extensively with 8-bit microcontrollers. He’s been documenting his work on his site, and finds himself frequently referencing his own material so remember how he did things. Our vicarious enjoyment is an unintended (but welcomed) consequence of that habit.

The first month of [WoolyDawg5's] summer break went into building one Nintendo emulator to rule them all. He thinks there’s nothing like playing the games on the original controllers, and we agree with him 100%. Here you can see that the cartridge door on this NES enclosure hides the extra connectors he needs.
With that door closed this looks like a stock console, but only from the front. If you take a look at the back of it you’ll see how he pulled this off. There’s a Zotac motherboard whose I/O panel has been fitted into the back. It’s responsible for emulating games for the NES, SNES, and GameCube consoles — we’re sure it can do more but that covers the controller ports seen here. Each port is wired to a USB controller module. The cables for these modules exit the back of the case and plug into the motherboard’s I/O panel. There is WiFi for the board, and that’s what [WoolyDawg] uses for configuration, tunneling into the OS instead of connecting a keyboard or mouse.
Of course you could just shoehorn all-original console hardware into one package to accomplish something like this.

EA Labels boss Frank Gibeau is a big fan of Microsoft's SmartGlass technology

    Electronic Arts

    www.ea.com

    Microsoft

    www.microsoft.com

The general consensus from most of the people we've talked with in the industry is that Xbox SmartGlass is a very smart move for Microsoft. Publishers seem genuinely excited by it (almost more so than by Wii U - though, that's purely anecdotal) and this was perhaps best exemplified by EA Labels boss Frank Gibeau who could hardly contain his enthusiasm for SmartGlass during E3.
"We love SmartGlass. I think it's a killer initiative. I really like it a lot," he toldGamesIndustry International. "It ties into what we're trying to do as a company. What we're trying to do as a developer of games is - we're looking at multi-screen environments as being really key in what's happening in gaming. You play games on your mobile. You play games on your PC. You play games on your console. So giving people more access points through multiple screens is a great thing."
EA Sports' Madden franchise was one of the few actual gaming examples used to illustrate SmartGlass during the Microsoft E3 briefing.
"It does definitely put positioning pressure on Nintendo because you don't have to buy a new system"
    Frank Gibeau

"Having SmartGlass capabilities, where it can talk between machines in a consistent way is fantastic, so we think there's a lot of innovation and the Madden example that they showed is just scratching the surface of play calling, play construction," Gibeau said. "You can imagine being able to do things in a shooter, where you're calling in command modes or squad based commands. So I think it's a great idea, the fact that they're going to standardize an API that we can write to, so we can make it a seamless experience for the customer, whether it's a Windows Phone, an Android, or an iOS is great."
EA Sports head Andrew Wilson also sounded off on the importance of SmartGlass to us.
"I think it's very important for a couple of reasons. SmartGlass will bring in a whole new audience to gaming, but with respect to SmartGlass integration with a console experience it is changing the way people interact with consoles. If you look at Madden or FIFA this year, they have a series of multi-screen applications that allow you to manage your connected career or manage your FIFA Ultimate team while you're in front of the screen or while you're away from the screen. What that's enabling is people to engage in a world that's very, very important to them that they're very passionate about even while they're away from their 60-inch television. So when we look at the future and what Microsoft is planning to do at an API and SDK level that only makes our job easier to deliver a gameplay schema that's absolutely prevalent in the way gamers play today," he said.

Is it genuine? Is it fake? Or so old as to be completely irrelevant? After first getting an early airing at the beginning of May on a little-known website with no media follow-up, the "Xbox 720" document has finally been distributed publicly in all its 56-page glory, offering what is apparently an intriguing glimpse of the future of the entire Xbox brand.
We see connectivity with other devices, we see the evolution of the platform into an all-encompassing media brand, we see sci-fi style augmented reality glasses cropping up in 2014, and finally a transition to full cloud streaming gameplay - and what could be interpreted as the end of consoles as we know it.
"Next-gen tech, transmedia gaming, augmented reality concepts and the end of the console as we know it - the Xbox 720 'leak' strains credibility somewhat but offers some interesting ideas"

At the time we first saw snippets of the original doc, we dismissed it as a hoax. As visionary as certain aspects were, many elements of the basic specs being discussed simply didn't stack up from a technical perspective - and to be brutally thank, they still don't. Beyond the vision, the spec sheet itself makes very little sense whatsoever.
With the actual 56-page Powerpoint file now leaked publicly and the additional notes this give us, it now seems more likely that the presentation is authentic, but also very, very old - dating from summer 2010. The focus is far more on ideas and the value of the overall offering presented in marketing terms rather than providing much in the way of hard data on what is planned for the technical make-up of the new machine. It is perhaps telling that of the 56 pages in the presentation, only one of them details the core technology underpinning the whole exercise, with nebulous specs and metrics that mostly seem to be plucked out of thin air. The documents discuss a $2,000 PC in a $300 box for the living room, but this is somewhat at odds with the actual hardware being proposed.

    2. Wii U News

Scott Rohde, the VP of Sony Worldwide Studios, has insisted that the combination of PS3 and Vita is a better prospect for consumers than Nintendo’s Wii U.
"Because we have the Vita, I think we can do a lot of special things,” he told Games Industry. “And remember, that Wii U tablet doesn't have a processor in it, so it's got to be fuelled by that box sitting under your TV.
“We can do some pretty special things that you'll start to see on the floor this year and you'll see more over the upcoming months about what you can do when you actually have a processor in the thing that's in your hand as well."
This, of course, neglects the fact that Vita sales (so far, at least) have failed to take off. Rohde, as you would expect however, remains optimistic.
"It's only been three months though, just three months,” he insists. “There are a lot of games on that machine and I think what we have to hang our hat on... every single person that actually picks that thing up absolutely loves it.
"So we're going to continue to build on that momentum. We have a lot of good things coming.”
