Even though SEGA isn't producing the Dreamcast anymore, the console lives on. Heck, tiny Japanese hobby developers still make shooters for it. The DC's legacy continues in our hearts, minds and Czech children's books. Over at UK:RESISTANCE, a reader writes:

"Hello from Czech republic. I like to read UKR so I decided to send you pics from book I found in niece's hands. It shows many common life things include electronics in form of drawn pictures. The author of book had to be very distinguished as Dreamcast was choosed as example of true video game system (and not the Sony crap) which should be recognized by kids"

The Mac clearly dates the book, but still. There's a generation of Czech kids who equate the Dreamcast with a video game console. Think about that! ...

Mr305 has updated his XMB app, heres the release news:

    What's this for?:

It lets you control XMB with Left & Right shoulder buttons for a different XMB experience. [Can also be disabled, read below]

Changes from 1.2 Final to 1.6:
    -----------------------------

    1) Perfect synchronization between the Status message and actual disabling of this L R navigation feature; past versions had problems where the message appeared either too early or too late.

    2) Now compatible with M33 VSH Menu; To see it, Press Select, Then press Up or Down. However, it's acting buggy.

    3) To Enable/Disable Shoulder button Navigation feature:
Press & Hold HOME BUTTON for about 2.5 seconds until the status message reads "ON" or "OFF".

Just under a fortnight ago, we found that the audio input pins on the iPod touch were indeed active and able to record audio. Now, a modder has constructed a smallish dock appendage that plugs directly into the touch and enables you to input audio. Apparently, the gizmo sports a built-in microphone and pre-amp, which could theoretically be used in VoIP applications or for recording simple voice notes. It seems as though the creator is offering these up to anyone interested, but you'll have to drop him an email to find out how much such an accessory will run you. ...

We've known for a while that David Jaffe has been extremely busy since he left Sony's Santa Monica Studios and formed his own development studio known as Eat Sleep Play. While he and fellow co-founder (and former Incognito founder) Scott Campbell have been hard at work on three brand new PlayStation 3 titles, they've also been working away at a brand new take on a classic franchise. Today, on the official PlayStation.Blog site, Jaffe showed off some of the first screens and footage of their upcoming title, Twisted Metal: Head-On: Extra Twisted Edition.

Vigorously stressing that Eat Sleep Play is not "a port house," Jaffe pointed out part of the reason behind returning to the series that he'd worked on so many years earlier. According to Jaffe, "We started talking and thinking and wondering: what if we could make it so much more? What if we could just stuff the thing to the brim with bonus features and new levels and updated graphics and really give the Twisted Metal franchise a fantastic send-off on the PlayStation 2? And when we thought about it like that, we got really excited."

As a result, the team at Eat Sleep Play have been remaking the PSP experience of Twisted Metal: Head-On for the PS2, keeping the same number of vehicles and weapons while adding a number of improvements to the title. The first significant change is updating the visuals to take advantage of the PS2's hardware, which appears to bring it more in line with the graphics found within Twisted Metal: Black. Along with this visual enhancement will be a brand new Twisted Metal: Head-on level, as well as four brand new stages that have been included from the never released Twisted Metal: Black 2 game.

Apart from adjusting the gameplay, the Extra Twisted Edition will feature a number of bonus features that have never been seen before, including a behind the scenes documentary, end movies from the first Twisted Metal that were cut from the game, the ability to control Sweet Tooth outside of his Ice Scream Truck, and other extras.

Slated to be released in Spring 2008, Twisted Metal: Head-On: Extra Twisted Edition will be exclusive to the PS2. We'll have more on the title as soon as it becomes available, but for now, check out the latest screens and teaser trailer for the game. ...

Chris Kohler, editor over at Game|Life, has up a great interview with Super Mario Galaxy director Yoshiaki Koizumi. They discuss the development of the Mario and Zelda games, clarifying Shigeru Miyamoto's tense relationship with stories (and sentences), and discussing the lineage of the Mario titles:
"In terms of spiritual successors, I've never found that to be the case. Whereas with the Zelda series, each game seems to follow pretty closely from the last with a few stylistic deviations. But Galaxy really feels like it went back to earlier roots with Super Mario Bros., in terms of trying to find that same tempo, that same feel. But for me, it's a matter of thinking what to do with each next step. There's nothing you really throw away. You think about these ideas and refine them constantly with every iteration of a game series. So for all the camera problems that you may have found in Mario 64 and Sunshine, even though we didn't realize how to fix those problems then, those solutions presented themselves over time and found their way into this game. I feel like you really can't have Galaxy without all of the things we learned from Sunshine."

Hot on the heels of the enormous Wiimote cabinet comes an absolutely gigantic Xbox 360 that truly has to be seen to be appreciated. Thankfully, there's a video of the thing waiting in the read link, but this beastly player opens up to reveal the perfect storage area for periodicals and pamphlets that are sure to collect dust and rarely ever be touched by human hands again. Additionally, a light was added behind the power button (no, it's not red) for good measure, but last we heard, the original Xbox controller (a.k.a Duke) was no longer on speaking terms with its biological cousin (pictured).

and also posted news of a future release:

Right now things are flowing rather well.. For reference, release #3 - 18 games - should be ready for another Saturday launch.

But there's one thing I've not yet attempted.

At some point, in the worryingly close future, I'm going to have to start adding levels to some of the games.
That is, you can't have a maze game if you don't have a maze..
And a platform puzzler is only as good as it's puzzles.

What I'd really like to do is to implement some sort of pseudo-random level generation system, so that each game can still be random without having to deal with "only the X levels I bothered to make"
I'm not entirely sure how possible that's going to be, and it would depend on each game.

For now, I'm avoiding "Level" based stuff completely, and focusing on purely random gameplay.
But if I get stuck, I might take you up on your offer, and send a big giant garbled pile of C code, most of which would be entirely undecipherable
