A small retail fiasco has unfolded this morning with the revelation that major games retail chain, EB Games, has started selling the highly anticipated Mass Effect a week ahead of the official street date, November 22.

We sought Microsoft Australia for comment. They replied with the following:

""The stock slipped through our logistics provider early by mistake. The official release date remains November 22nd, we are working with our retail partners around this."

We actually ventured out to our local EB Games and came away with a copy of the game and some inside knowledge. We read the email instructions dated November 15 at roughly 3:30pm. To paraphrase, the email began with "Good news!" and stated that stock had just been received and was currently being distributed to branches Australia wide for a noon-time delivery. It also finished with instructions to "sell immediately" and call all preorder customers and notify them.

The Australian Mass Effect retail box we bought.
We've also sought comment from EB Games Australia and are currently awaiting a call back.

Update: We just spoke to a senior member of the EB Games Australia head office team. He confirmed that there was no embargo issued on the game, unlike Halo 3 or the upcoming release of Assassins Creed. He also stated that it was EB Games' policy to adhere to any requested street date release provided and, since there was none for Mass Effect, the decision was made to sell it.

The official EB Games Australia website currently displays an image promoting the early release of the game. It is not currently known what impact this will have on the sales reactions of other retail chains; however a JB Hi-Fi games manager indicated to us that they were adhering to the original release date.

We'll provide updates as information presents itself. The current review embargo for websites still stands at November 20. Look for our review around that date. ...

A free update for Guitar Hero III is now available to download on Xbox Live.

Its 72MB and gives you original compositions by hairy guitarist Slash and Tom Morello, as well as cover track Devil Went Down to Georgia as made famous by The Charlie Daniels Band.

Worth pointing out that this is already in the game, but now you can get it without thrashing your way to the necessary bit of the single-player mode.

This is all theoretical for us Europeans, naturally, as GH3 is not actually out here until next Friday. However, the US already has two downloadable song packs from Velvet Revolver and the Foo Fighters, and if you are unsure about either you can watch new trailers for them on Marketplace to make your mind up.

Slash is in Velvet Revolver, though, and they were awesome at Live 8. He is awesome in general. Lovely leather trousers and hair.

Go and read our Guitar Hero III review and get excited. Best yet. ...

US videogame hardware and software sales increased 73 per cent in October according to NPD sales data.

Total sales were USD 1.1 billion, compared with USD 643 million a year earlier.

Nintendo's Wii returned to lead hardware sales with 519,000 consoles sold, ahead of 366,000 Xbox 360 consoles and 121,000 PlayStation 3 consoles. The Xbox 360 temporarily knocked the Wii out of the top spot in September, thanks to the release of Halo 3.

Total videogame software sales were USD 513.9 million, up 39 per cent from the previous October.

Halo 3 led software sales for the month of October, despite a significant drop from the prior month, with 433,800 units sold.

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, bundled with the guitar controller, held the second, third, and fourth spots on the chart. The Xbox 360 version was the most popular SKU, with 383,200 units sold, followed by 286,300 units of the Wii version and 271,100 units of the PS2 version.

The PS2 version, sans guitar controller, came in at number eight, with 231,700 units sold.

Other titles in the top ten were The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass for the DS, at number five with 262,800 units sold, Wii Play at number six with 239,700 units sold, and the Xbox 360 version of The Orange Box at number seven with 238,400 units sold.

Rounding out the top ten were the PS2 version of FIFA Soccer 08, with 129,700 units sold, and the DS game Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day, with 116,900 units sold. ...

Nintendo has responded to an analyst's claims that it has completed work on a new version of its DS Lite handheld, maintaining that it is "rumour and speculation and we are not commenting further."

Evan Wilson, from Pacific Crest Securities, is quoted in a GameSpot report as saying that the new model was "thinner, has on-board storage, and larger screens," and would lose the GBA port to accommodate the changes.

The report continued that any new version of the hardware wouldn't be unveiled for some time, "until sales begin to tail off in all three major geographies."

While Nintendo has a history of periodically refreshing its handheld consoles, such as the GameBoy Advance and also the DS, it's possible that a new edition may come as some point, but the company is refusing to be drawn further for now. ...

KOEI has told Eurogamer that Samurai Warriors: Katana will be on Euro-shelves on 22nd February - just one month later than the US.

It's the Wii version of its popular arcade samurai slash-'em-up, where you journey back to feudal Japan and liberate the land with your katana.

Big attractions this time are using the Wiimote to sever limbs from your enemies as you attack and conquer bases, gradually building your army and earning a name for yourself along the way.

Alongside the campaign mode sits a training area where you can earn gold to buy better equipment for your martial master, and a head-to-head option so you can go at it with a friend.

Sony is happy at the moment. PS3 sales have almost tripled in the US, and new official figures from Japan have revealed that Sony's console has actually outsold the seemingly unstoppable Wii for the first time ever.

For the week ending November 11, Media Create figures put PS3 sales at 55, 924, while Wii only managed 34,546.

This is great news for Sony, whose sales were probably helped along by the recent release of Dydnasty Warriors 4 - the latest in the mundane hack-'em-up that those guys seem to lap up.

The PSP did well, too, with over 58,000 sales - just 20,000 behind the DS with 78,000 sales. Could this be a turning point for Sony? Here's the complete list of hardware sales in Japan for the week ending November 11:
    • DS - 78,884
    • PSP - 58,964
    • PS3 - 55,924
    • Wii - 34,546
    • PS2 - 9,043
    • Xbox 360- 5,817
    • GB Micro - 708
    • GBASP - 211
    • GC - 69
    • GBA - 4

The Club Nintendo shop on the official Japanese Nintendo website is giving away a Wii controller that looks exactly like a Super NES pad, and a two-disc Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack to its members.

Nintendo promises the pant-wetting gear to Platinum members of the site - who will have had to have bought and registered a certain number of Nintendo games - similar to the European equivalent Stars catalogue.

The SNES pad is a classic controller shaped exactly like the old original, and will be sent to the lucky members in April next year. The 81-song Galaxy soundtrack will turn up in January. Of course, you have to live in Japan or its no cake for you.

Meanwhile, the kick-in-the-balls UK equivalent is offering wallpaper pictures for mobile phones (that you can make yourself with a little effort), and the only game available - Age of Empires: the Age of Kings - has been sold out for months.

Just look at the awesome stuff Japan gets. Then consider moving there. ...

The internet is alive with the living-dead speculation that Sega is set to release a House of the Dead package for Wii.

According to reports, game rental site Gamefly.com was listing House of the Dead Return 2&3 for Nintendo's console. We say "was", because the game listing appears to have now been removed....

However, not before it was spotted by Neo Gaf forumites, who also appear to be suggesting the following information has come from PR for Sega Europe:

In THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD 2&3 RETURN, players will be able to play both versions of the game, battling the relentless attack of bloodthirsty zombies with steady aim and a quick trigger finger.

Utilising the innovative new Wii Zapper or the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, players will experience branching storylines with over six game modes including Arcade Mode and Time Attack modes that will test their shooting skills. THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD 2&3 RETURN features an engaging single-player campaign, plus a co-op multiplayer mode for up to two players for countless hours of zombie shooting action.

"THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD franchise has been revamped for today's gamer looking for fast-paced shooting action on the Wii" commented Gary Knight, Marketing Director of SEGA Europe. "Utilising the new Wii Zapper, the player can get the renowned light gun experience in their own home."

THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD is famous for its heart-pounding pace and the great visual detail of the vast armies of unique enemies. Blasting through legions of grotesque zombies and mutated monsters, players eventually face-off against colossal boss creatures that will test the accuracy and skill of every Wii gamer.

THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD 2&3 RETURN will be available for the Wii home video game system from Nintendo in spring 2008.

We've received no such press release or word from Sega Europe on such a game for Wii, but we'll be hitting the phones later this morning to find out the score. ...

Blazing Angels 2 and Toy Home are the two demos posted on the US PlayStation 3 Store this week, giving you a chance to finally fix that pesky old World War II's little red wagon, and then drive little red wagons around for a bit.

Blazing Angels: Secret Missions of World War II sees players return to the skies above everyone's favourite Second World War and introduces a new progression system and an in-cockpit view among other tweaks and changes.

These weren't enough to get Eurogamer's Rob Fahey terribly excited during his review of the Xbox 360 version, but with the benefit of the demo you won't have to rely on what that old maniac says to inform your purchase decision ahead of the 23rd November PS3 release date. Providing you've got 1GB of hard disk space free.

Toy Home, meanwhile, is a Game Republic-authored racing game where you traverse eight racetracks spread around a house and filled with obstacles. It's got 8-player multiplay but no giant crabs of which we're aware.

Elsewhere on the US PSN shop this week there are loads of trailers - including some for Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction, PAIN, Time Crisis 4, Burnout Paradise and Uncharted, and some more Uncharted wallpapers. ...

Sony has smothered the PlayStation Store in Thursday, covering it in new content.

Well, we say new, but we're not sure how happy you will be with your solo demo of Stranglehold. A rumour was floating around that Haze was going to join it, but it seems to have been little more than gossip.

Still, those of you with a PlayStation Eye can grab the new Mesmerize visualisation thing. It costs GBP 1.99 and lets you wave your limbs about to effect in-game vistas, like making spring to life or twin neon trails twist about.

MotorStorm has got more new bits and bobs, too - this time a fancy Big I Bunny and Numskull livery pack for GBP 1.49. Dress-up for cars and motorbikes and buggy things, then.

Elsewhere there are videos for the excellent and freshly reviewed Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Everyday Shooter and Blazing Angels 2. Oh, and a TV commercial as well as a trailer for new Pixar film Wall-E. ...
