Manchester Cathedral has "forgiven" Sony for using a replica of the holy building in PS3 shooter Resistance: Fall of Man.

The format holder outraged religious leaders earlier this year for using a mock-up of the interior of the Church in the hit first-person shooter.

But now, after failing to win an award at last night's BAFTA awards, the Very Reverend Rogers Govender has decided to put the incident in the past - even though Sony refuses to accept it has done wrong.

"I think some important lessons have been learnt," said the Dean of Manchester, speaking to the BBC. "So we forgive Sony for what they have done, even though they still believe they have done no wrong."

"In an industry that is breaking new frontiers, it is important that long held traditions of film and television are maintained. These traditions include having courtesy, respecting the dignity of your subject, and admitting when mistakes have been made," he said.

"In so many ways Sony have failed to live up to these standards by disrespecting people of faith and the victims of gun crime in Manchester," he added.

He also added that visits to the Cathedral have increased since the controversy hit the news headlines. ...

According to Shacknews, the latest PS3 software update, v1.94, will add support for the upcoming DualShock3 rumble controller. The update will also include Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, the first PS3 game to take advantage of DualShock3. Apparently the rumble feature can be toggled by pressing the PS button in the middle of the controller and selecting it via the options screen. Unfortunately those of us in the US and Europe won't be able to take advantage of this new/old functionality until this spring, when the DualShock3 is released to the masses (outside of Japan of course.) ...

Just when you thought the PlayStation 2 was dead and buried, another publisher comes along with a new title for the aging console. In this case its SouthPeak Games with futuristic racing title Iridium Runners, zooming to Europe in February, 2008.

It's not as hackneyed as it sounds though, this Iridium Runners: rather than diving behind the wheel of a snazzy speedster, you've got to dash on foot, collecting all manner of power-ups and over-the-top weapons. So, Mario Kart without the karts, basically.

Iridium Runners features several game modes, including a full championship, single race and a split-screen multiplayer. When racing with others, you can play a more traditional free-for-all race or take part in the team mode, which pits two groups of two players against each other.

Melanie Mroz, executive vice president of SouthPeak Games had this to say, of all things: "Iridium Runners is another example of the fun, distinctive and unique titles that we look to publish. The PlayStation 2 market is still thriving and Iridium Runners will represent great value for money, thanks in no small part to the team at Playstos." ...

wintermute has updated the ARM compiler used in making homebrew for the DS, GBA, and GP2X.

libnds and the NDS examples have also been updated.

The devkitPro coffers are also running a little low and it’s almost time to pay the hosting fees again so, if you have any spare change in Paypal and feel that devkitPro is a worthwhile cause please feel free to make a donation using the button at the top of the menu.

I’ve just finished uploading the files for devkitARM release 21.

    * Upgraded to gcc 4.1.2
    * Added gdb by popular request
    * Now including libraries for ARM big-endian devices - this relates to a request from the winARM maintainers, not DS related.
    * Newlib patches extended to allow time() to work on the DS
    * argv has been added - this will require support from the homebrew launcher menu on various cards
    * ndstool now uses the default arm7 core distributed with libnds in preference to an embedded one
    * Now working on Vista/Vista64 - users who were impatient and modified paths should now remove those changes

    devkitARM release 21

devkitARM release 21 requires libnds 20071023 - the argv and time additions have part of the implementation in libnds. The latest DS crt0 also calls extra startup code not present in earlier libnds versions.

    * some freeBSD fixes to makefiles
    * added RTC setup and sound initialisation to arm7 core
    * corrected glViewport for openGL consistency ( old spelling was glViewPort) , correct angle for gluPerspective and corrected glFrustum matrix
    * IRQ nesting now works properly
    * other more general fixes detailed in the changelog on SF
    * DS examples updated for latest libnds

    libnds 20071023

    nds examples 20071023

All files are now available through the automatic installer/updater.

Here are a few news from the Giana's Return team:

after a heavy motivation lack of the organizer (the coder and beta tester were still pretty active) here comes a larger update...

    * we have a new graphic artist, who was and is involved in commercial gba and nds games. he will take care of the tilesets and will adjust them to the backgrounds of each world. we can assure you, the first drafts look excellent and the game will rock even more. if the first tileset has been retouched, you'll find a screenshot or more here.
    * our main musician operator is currently not reachable, or not answering our mails, for whatever reason. this ain't too bad, because there are two other people who are willing to help out. music isn't really an issuse and quality chipmusic is granted as well. the two guys i am talking about made a soundtrack for "poussin", the successor of "xump" (gp32, dreamcast, win32) but as the second part of xump will take some time, we will just misuse the unreleased tracks for giana.
    * parts of the storyline are drawn, just minor work is left.
    * when time comes, we need few translators, who will localize the game into their mother tongue. so far there is an english version and a pretty poor german translation. basically everything is possible if we have a translator: french, spanish, hungarian, finish, swedish, whatever... but for this we will need you! you can already start posting in the comments, we will get back to you. english, french and german are already covered.

if we keep the speed as it is, we hope to pull the game out by around new year, but this shouldn't be a promise

The game will be available for all major homebrew enabled systems such as GP2x, Dreamcast, GP32, etc...

Im sure most of you who are big gaming fans will know that last October at this very time of the year Lik Sang a vastly popular online store and big supporter of the Homebrew community was closed down. Due to many Sony lawsuits.

Fast forward a year and Divineo who somehow got past a 9 Million Dollar fine in the USA have now been raided and assets frozen. Does this spell the end of Divineo and its stores which also include the Maxthingy website.

To lose a big site who sell flash carts and modchips that are used for homebrew means that the pirates have again spoiled it for the rest of us.

Is it time for hackers and emulation fans to leave these consoles behind and concentrate on consoles that embrace homebrew ?
