At the ongoing Ubidays event in Paris, Ubisoft has announced a console port of the first-person fantasy title, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. The singular use of "console" should be emphasized, as the Xbox 360 will be the sole recipient of Arkane Studios' Source-powered adventure.

Eurogamer reports that Dark Messiah of Might and Magic: Elements will be the same as last year's PC version, with the exception of a clumsy subtitle and new content. Presumably, said content includes technical stability and a framerate that can be taken seriously. A release date has not yet been announced. ...

Following a financial briefing in Tokyo today, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada gave clear indication of when to expect Final Fantasy XIII -- er, rather, of when not to expect the fair-haired rpg. "[The game] will still take a bit more time. At the very least, [a release] this fiscal year is definitely out of the question," said Wada. Square Enix's fiscal year ends March 31, 2008.

Wada's forecast comes just a day after Konami indicated that Metal Gear Solid 4 would squeeze into stores before the end of the fiscal year. ...

We're told - by urban dressed Nintendo editors who sit slightly to the left of us - that Naruto is something of a manga phenomenon.

We imagine then, that many people will be excited by Ubisoft's 360 game tie-in, Naruto: Rise of a Ninja, which you can watch move in the video player on the right. And check out screenshots.

Christian Salomon, Ubisoft's worldwide licensing director, said of the series last month: "Naruto is a huge hit around the world, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to develop a game that will bring this exciting character to life Naruto is part of a wave of Japanese manga and anime that appeals to kids and adolescents alike."

According to Ubisoft, it's due out at the end of this year.

Rayman Raving Rabbids, one of the launch games for Wii, may not have been given the warmest welcome in the press, but it sold pretty well, and here you have it - first screens of the sequel.

The Rabbids failed in their attack on Rayman's world in the previous mini-game outing, so now they're turning their destructive effort towards Earth.

Actual gameplay details are sketchy at the moment, but Ubisoft does reveal that Rayman will need to infiltrate the bunny hive as one of them (presumably disguised), and we expect plenty more mini games to come out of that.

Earlier this week it was announced that South Korea would be getting a new model of the PlayStation 3 console, sporting a larger, 80GB hard drive. So far Sony has said that there are no immediate plans to release the new machine--said to be identical to the European model in every other way--in other countries.

The reasoning behind releasing an 80GB PS3 in South Korea is now becoming clearer--Sony plans to offer video-on-demand services to the region, reports the Korea Times.

Sony Korea spokesperson Park Seo-yun told the newspaper that the company was in negotiations with possible partner companies for the VOD service, although she declined to name them or offer a timeline. The PS3 is due to be released in South Korea on June 16.

An anonymous Hanaro Telecom--a Korean phone company--spokesperson commented, "We are negotiating with Sony and the atmosphere is pretty good. We hope to be able to reach an agreement in June."

We now have a few new screenshots from Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, a first-person adventure developed by Retro for Nintendo Wii. The main character, Samus, must boot up the generator to restore the defense systems of the Galactic Federation’s Base Sector Zero which is under attack by Space Pirates. Players control Samus by moving with the Nunchuk controller and aiming with the pointer. Samus will employ well-known power-ups like the Grapple Beam and Morph Ball, as well as a bunch of new surprises, to help her survive her coming trials. Besides using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers to pull off feats like aiming and blasting in midair or at a full run, players also will have an array of different weapons at their disposal. In true Metroid fashion, these will become powered up as the game progresses. Not only that, but the controller will be used for a number of other game elements beyond the traditional first-person shooter standards.

    PS3 Firmware Version 1.80 Announced

Latest PLAYSTATION 3 Firmware Update Provides PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and DVD Upscaling

Remote Play on PSP (PlayStation Portable) via the Internet and DLNA transfer of media content also enabled

London, 24 May 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced today availability of the latest version of the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) firmware. Version 1.80 features upscaling of PlayStation® and PlayStation 2 games, and DVD movies up to full 1080p HD resolution when viewed on a compatible HD TV set.

The capability to upscale DVDs to HD quality is a feature normally only associated with top range DVD players, and its inclusion in the latest firmware upgrade now allows PS3 owners with an existing DVD collection to dramatically enhance the viewing pleasure of their DVD collection when viewed through a compatible HD TV set1. Not only can DVD movies be enhanced to full 1080p HD quality but so too will PlayStation 2 and PlayStation games be upscaled to provide much improved gaming pleasure.

In a comprehensive update to PS3’s already impressive capabilities, Version 1.80 also allows users to enjoy Remote Play on their PSP across the internet, allowing them to access their PS3 anywhere in the world where a broadband internet connection is available2.

Version 1.80 also allows users on a home network to seamlessly view and play rich media content such as images, music and video on their PS3, that is stored on their DLNA3 enabled devices such as PCs and laptops elsewhere in the house, reinforcing PS3’s credentials as a home entertainment hub that truly deserves pride of place in the Living Room.

A host of other enhancements include the ability to print photo images stored on PS3’s hard disk or inserted storage media to a selection of Epson printers.

PS3 owners will be able to upgrade their PS3 with the latest Version 1.80 firmware from 24th May 2007.

    - ends -

    Notes

    1. DVD-ROM (including DVD Video content) can only be upscaled with HDMI compatible TV sets.

    2. Use of Remote Play requires a powered up PS3 with Version 1.80 as well as PSP firmware version 3.50 which will be available at the end of May.

    3. DLNA – Digital Living Network Alliance. For more info on DLNA, please see http://www.dlna.org/en/consumer/home
