Source: A report on trade site Gamasutra, citing a THQ quarterly conference call as its source.

What we heard: There were a lot of interesting tidbits coming out of THQ's quarterly conference call this morning. The company confirmed that it would be making WWE games on the Wii and DS in addition to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable. It talked about the cost of porting a PS3 game to the Xbox 360. It admitted it was planning its release schedule around Halo 3 and Grand Theft Auto IV so as not to go head-to-head with those games for the same audience. It mentioned for the first time the actual name of its announced Stuntman sequel: Stuntman Ignition.

And according to Gamasutra, it also confirmed that it was going to release a new Red Faction game in its next fiscal year (April 2007 through March 2008 for those keeping track). Such a move would certainly be in keeping with the company's plan to increase the amount of revenue derived from intellectual properties it already owns, as opposed to pricey licenses like SpongeBob and WWE. THQ CEO Brian Farrell even told analysts in the call, "Our fiscal 2008 growth will be driven primarily by increased sales of proven owned intellectual properties, a cornerstone of our strategy."

Farrell also talked about original franchises in the company's longer-term plans.

"When you think about fiscal 2009 and beyond, there are three important takeaways we would like to leave you with," Farrell told analysts. "One, THQ has established six owned franchises which have reached the million-unit mark and our pipeline is growing. Two, our long-term license franchises, the WWE, Pixar, and Nickelodeon, have each shipped 30 million units. And three, we are exploiting new revenue opportunities such as microtransactions and in-game advertising and we continue to expand our global footprint."

After Farrell had wrapped up the presentation portion of the call, the lines were opened for analysts to ask questions. A Merrill Lynch analyst asked Farrell to "list out the six franchise brands you referred to." Farrell responded by mentioning Saints Row, Stuntman, Juiced, Destroy All Humans!, MX, "and my favorite, Red Faction."

Clearly THQ has not forgotten Red Faction. And with its increased emphasis on original IPs, a return to the series is not outside of the realm of possibility. However, nowhere in the call did the publisher actually say that it was developing games for all of its six established franchises, nor did anyone confirm there was a new Red Faction game in development.

The official story: A THQ representative chose not to comment, but referred us to a transcript of the conference call.

    Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus.

When Dance Dance Revolution first arrived in the United States, it won critical acclaim and an audience that stretched beyond the traditional gamer market due in part to its unique dance-pad controller. When the Wii launched in the US last November, it was received with similar praise and enthusiasm from nontraditional gamers for its unique Wii Remote controller.

Konami today created an intersection between those two stories with the announcement of Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party for the Wii. Using a traditional DDR dance pad in conjunction with the Wii Remote, DDR Hottest Party requires players to match controller movements with the remote and Nunchuk attachment, as well as dance steps. The game will also support up to four players in multiple game modes and minigames.

In addition to the series' free play and workout modes, Hottest Party will challenge players to dance in synch with one another, as well as offer a new support mode and an updated battle mode. The game will also sport a new soundtrack with songs pulled from the last four decades of popular music.

Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party is slated for a 2007 release

For a comedy that's 23 years old, Ghostbusters is sure getting a lot of attention. The newfound interest came courtesy of several clips that surfaced on YouTube in January which appeared to show an impressive-looking game based on the comedy classic. Later that same week, Slovenian developer Zootfly admitted it had a prototype Ghostbusters game running on an Xbox 360 but warned that development "had hit a snag" in terms of the IP.

"We hoped the publisher would sort out the IP issue in a jiffy and we'd be recharging proton packs in no time," ZootFly CEO Bostjan Troha told GameSpot. "Unfortunately, they didn't push to untangle the IP hard enough and the whole thing stalled a bit." Though Troha wouldn't name the IP holder, some speculated that Sony, which owns the Ghostbusters film rights, might scuttle development of the game rather than see it go to the 360.

Today, new information on the Ghostbusters project surfaced--courtesy of a member of the Ghostbusters cast. Touring in his native Canada as one half of the Blues Brothers, Dan Aykroyd revealed to the Edmonton Sun that he will be appearing in the game. He also revealed who holds the game rights to the film.

"Universal [Studios] purchased the rights from Sony for a game," Aykroyd told the Sun. "I'm actually going to have to perform and do some motion capture for them. That will be next year."

If correct, Aykroyd's comments have two implications: First, a Ghostbusters game won't appear until 2008--at the earliest. It also appears to debunk the Sony-as-spoiler rumor, although the blank YouTube pages which bore the game footage now read, "This video has been removed at the request of copyright owner Sony Pictures Entertainment because its content was used without permission."

One question the Aykroyd interview didn't answer was which company is publishing Ghostbusters. Given French media company Vivendi SA still has a major stake in its former subsidiary Universal, which is now part of NBC Universal, some assumed Vivendi Games would be distributing Ghostbusters.

However, a VG spokesman said his company has announced no such deal. "I can't comment," he told GameSpot. "This is a rumor and we do not comment on rumors."

While some users of the Wii complained of soreness or 'Wii elbow' when playing it too much, others are heralding its workout value. The University of Toronto is working on a 'therapeutic video game' for the Wii that is designed to help children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy exercise their weaker limb, people are claiming weight loss and in the January issue of Pediatrics the Mayo clinic is proposing that gaming systems like the Wii can combat child obesity ...

Paradox writes in with a link to an MSNBC article that shouldn't be too surprising for anyone: the real winners of the console war are the DS and the PS2. Boasting numbers unmatchable by the johnny-come-lately next-gen consoles, the PS2 and Nintendo DS each sold about 1.5 Million units last December. Article author Kristin Kalning points out the reality: given the high quality of gaming in general nowadays, the low prices and rich libraries of these 'venerable' systems will see them in circulation for some time to come. Given the success of last-gen consoles, what are your plans regarding gaming systems? Are you holding out for price drops, or considering buying one of the older systems now that they're considerably less expensive? ...

Via Ketchup site comes a new MSX Emulator for the Nintendo DS:

    Heres the translated info:

    PenkoDS?
PenkoDS is an emulator MSX2 for Nintendo DS. It is based on fmsx of Marat Fayzullin.
The speed of emulation is currently 75% on average (either about 30 to 40% faster than the port fmsx of nyagosu of which I took again the management of the keyboard and the joystick).

    Among the functionalities, one finds:
    - A resize mode to manage the various resolutions of the MSX.
    - Support DLDI
    - Support of the roms and the discs
    - Management of the sound (with the same problems as under CrocoDS)

Level use, it is enough for you to copy the Romanian one in the root or the /roms/msx repertory of your chart flash, patcher the nds with patchor DLDI and of launching this homebrew from your Nintendo DS

To test with the version msx bombjack of Kralizec or with one of the releases of the MSXDEV' 06.

One of the large bugs current is the impossibility of rebooter after the insertion of a disc MSX. (On the other hand, not of problem of reboot with the roms). This version is a version alpha, therefore I await all your remarks in order to improve it.

Heres whats new in this new release:

2nd version alpha. I mainly worked on the speed of emulation. The 100% are atteinds in many plays. Some bugs were corrected such as the management of the transparency in mode 2, the redundancy of the files in the selector of files,… the support of DLDI should be better. The sound too.

    New release from Madruscoe:

    Hello everybody
There were some annoying things for me in PMP Mod AVC. Through my poor PSP programming experiences, I did some changes. The most important imo was the time and battery display in PMP (have no wrist watch and dont use irShell :-) ) and some subtitle stuff. Feel free to use if you like it. Never mind if you dont. :-)

    Analogue stick in filelist:
    - up/down = up/down
    - left = exit
    - right = play

    Headphones/remote control in filelist:
    - forward = down
    - back = up
    - play/pause = play

Thumbnails are .png files with resolution 96x54 px. They can be created on pc and correctly named (movie.pmp, movie.png...) but when .pos file are generated, png will be overwritten by new screenshot.

    to-do/plans/ideas:
    - better interface (gui), graphics (I have no much time )
    - analogue pad/remote control support during video play (?)
    - directory support in filelist (important!)
    - standby support (?)
    - playlist

Verison 1.02M-I (02.02.07) tuned by madruscoe:

    - fixed displaying long filenames in deleting dialog window
    - added ability to set any brightness you want (included 4th brightness

    FAQ:
What to do with these files/folders? Where to place it?
    - If you are running SE or OE firmware, place "__SCE__PMPMODAVC" and "%__SCE__PMPMODAVC" to \PSP\GAME150 folder on your memory stick (or set kernel to 1.50 and put it in GAME folder). Otherwise (running 1.50) place it to \PSP\GAME.

    Where to place video(s)?
    - To \PSP\VIDEO

    My videos not playing...
    - Make sure you use PMP (1) AVC videos (encoded) and NOT PMP 2. Files are allowed have extension .pmp or .avc.

So what application shall I use for encoding?
    - Personally I use and recommend you XviD4PSP having plenty of setting for encode (like cropping etc.). Of course you can use any encoder you like which support PMP AVC. Anyway the encoding take pretty loooong time (6 fps on AMD Duron 800 MHz, 20 fps on Intel Celeron 1.7 GHz...). If you are not so experienced with encoding video see some guide at this forum that helps you get the best video quality ;-). Another supported tool is AVItoPMP.

    Subtitles?
    - Yes. At first, if you need some special character encoding, delete font10.f (in __SCE__PMPMODAVC folder) and rename for example font10_centraleuropean.f to font10.f. (You can make your own font, see raphael’s devblog and get latest FontGenerator).
If your movie title is "Movie ABC.pmp" then I recommend you to name subtitles "Movie ABC.sub" or "Movie ABC.srt" to work correctly.

Reasons why to use PMP Mod AVC:
    - PMP Mod AVC runs 120 MHz so you can play videos longer (than with 222 MHz)
    - subtitles can be placed as a separate (.sub) file so you can during playback switch color/font... turn off/on them
    - support for more than one audio stream
    - support for possition - playing starts from time you last stop the video even when you turn off the psp
    - no need flashing your psp to enjoy the full resolution
    - volume boost can the audio make louder

Why to use MP4 in 3.03 OE:
    - you save about 15 second (no reboot of psp to load homebrew) but lost some time looking for the possition you last time stop your video (not standby but turn off psp) and even hours cause of the processor frequency
    - user interface may look better for you
