An interview in Japanese consumer magazine Nintendo Dream with legendary Nintendo producer Shigeru Miyamoto has suggested that the company may be considering releasing revamped, alternately controlled versions of existing GameCube games for the forthcoming Wii console.

The company has already indicated that some of its Virtual Console titles, such as those on the Nintendo 64, may receive some improvements by the nature of being emulated on the faster Wii CPU. Although it has never been specific about what form these improvements may take, the version of Super Mario 64 shown at E3 was clearly running at a higher resolution and frame rate than the original version.

In the Nintendo Dream interview, as partially translated by consumer site IGN, though, Miyamoto specifically raises the idea of “remaking” some GameCube titles to take advantage of the Wii’s motion sensing controller.

He noted: "The machine is based on GC... We'll be upgrading the development tools, but GameCube code can be used for the most part as is. In that sense, I believe that it would be good to remake GameCube games for Wii, and that some titles would become better with the change to the Wii remote controller." ...

An updated version of seminal sports game California Games has been confirmed for release on Wii, DS and PSP next year. California Games will also include bonus features from Winter Games and Summer Games. A refreshed Impossible Mission will also be released.

California Games was a huge success for original developer Epyx in the late '80s, spanning over 10 platforms including Atari's doomed Lynx handheld and Sega's Mega Drive. The new game aims to preserve the magic of the original hits, and both Impossible Mission and California Games will be largely unchanged from the old school originals.

Developer System 3 says it will be a big supporter of Nintendo's next-gen console, with both titles due to hit Wii shortly after launching on handhelds - but they won't be released for PS3 or 360. "The way the controllers work and the whole idea of it actually works a lot better than if it's on PS3 or 360", says Mark Kale, founder of System 3.

Impossible Mission will be released on PSP and DS in the US next January, with California Games following in May, before both games hit Wii soon afterwards. UK launch dates have yet to be confirmed. ...

In a speech delivered at the Leipzig GC Developer Conference, I-play's Stephane Labrunie has declared that mobile gaming is set to overtake console gaming by the end of the year.

According to Labrunie, mobile gaming "is the definition of a true mass market; it's not a niche market, as is console gaming."

To support this argument, Labrunie pointed to the fact that 48 per cent of mobile gamers are female, while 58 per cent are aged between 18 and 34. Although he conceded that the market "will take time to grow", Labrunie stated that "This market will sell more games on mobile than traditional consoles in 2006."

He went on to quote figures which forecast sales of 1.8 billion game-enabled handsets by 2008. By 2010, the number of paid downloads per year is set to reach 1.7 billion, while gross revenues will rise to US$ 5.9 billion.

However, Labrunie said, there are still problems to overcome. Around 33 per cent of handset owners don't know they can play games on their phones, and while more than 50 per cent have played embedded games or demos, just 5 per cent have actually downloaded a game. In addition, 16 per cent of gamers say pricing is a barrier to downloading more games.

"We have customers, but definitely not enough," Labrunie stated.

"Some have no more credit on their pre-pay card, some do not have time, some don't know how to download games... Trust is a very important factor, because you need to buy in a safe environment.

"If you keep all that in mind, it will help us to build a good strategy to perform well in this business."

Labrunie said that the emergence of new technologies, such as 3G, will help to boost the mobile gaming market. "New technology, from my point of view, is really about faster, easier access to the network... You will have a much more intuitive experience - you will know where to download mobile games, and you will know how to do it."

He went on to encourage designers to "think simplicity, traction and innovation" when creating games, and he also had some advice for fellow publishers: "We need to put the customer in the middle of our thinking. I'm saying that because you have to remember that mobile gaming is not a retail market; it's very much driven by the carrier industry."

Concluding his speech, Labrunie said that "the best is yet to come", reaffirming that "Mobile gaming will be the fastest growing segment of the total videogames industry". ...

Although the first PlayStation3 dev kits were nothing short of gigantic (similar to those PSP dev kits), it looks like Sony has released a "final" version -- one which doesn't exhale winds kin to a tropical storm and whine like a jet engine -- that's been tracked down and posterized. As expected, the juicy details here are few and far between, but at first glance it does seem to sport the obligatory optical Blu-ray drive, and on-hand reports stated that an alpha build of Full Auto 2 was among the data housed on the 80GB hard drive. Initial reactions were relatively positive, garnering praise for its sleek menus and "lag-free" play while connected to the PlayStation Network. The lucky few who wound up handling the not-yet-finalized controller dug the lightweight feel (thanks to the omission of a rumble feature), and noted that switching from wired to wireless modes was much snappier than the versions at (the final) E3. Unfortunately, no new information was leaked about titles in development, and no substantial secrets were unearthed, but hopefully that'll change pretty soon once these start making the rounds.

Sony has announced that, as of August 23, the PlayStation 2's price will drop from £105 to £95.

At least, that's what we're presuming will happen in the UK, given that the European price has had €20 shaved off its €149.99 RRP.

So now you can buy a PS2 and have an unexpected tenner left over to spend on beer. Or buy four PS2s plus a couple of games for the price of a PS3. If that isn't cause for celebration, we don't know what is. Particularly now that, as we revealed earlier, the PS2 is soon to become pretty in pink. ...

Shigeru Miyamoto, in an interview with Nintendo Dream, has revealed that Nintendo has reworked the control system for the Wii version of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Now, as with Ubisoft's Red Steel, Zelda: Twilight Princess will let you wield the Wii remote as a sword.

The version of Twilight Princess shown at E3 forced players to operate Link's sword by pressing the B button, but the actual game will now let players make like Errol Flynn, which in turn frees up the B button for firing arrows (at E3, the D-Pad was used for archery).

In the interview, Nintendo's revered, perpetually grinning, resident genius also said: "I'm also thinking I can remake some of my GameCube games for Wii, making use of the Wii-mote. Of course you can wander into a second hand shop and buy a lot of these games still, so I don't think we can release these games at full price. Since a lot of the development cost has already been accounted for, we'll be able to release these at a much more affordable price."

The prospect of cheap GameCube games re-engineered for the Wii-mote should make Nintendo fan-boys come over all unnecessary. And stay tuned for further Ninty revelations from Leipzig on Wednesday. ...
