Uprising has ported Mad Bomber to the GP2X:

"Mad Bomber" is a clone of Activision's classic Atari 2600 console game, "Kaboom!",by Larry Kaplan with spruced-up graphics and sound effects, and music.

The Mad Bomber is loose in the city and he's dropping bombs everywhere! It's your job to catch them before they hit the ground and explode.
Luckily, you have a set of trusty buckets to extinguish the bombs with. This is my first port so go easy on me :P.

The Street analyzes Nintendo's fifth generation home console, the Wii, as compared to Microsoft and Sony's offering. In addition, the article explores the success of the company's first-party games, especially for the DS. Tero Kuittinen writes:

"DS is a game console that has become a mainstream success basically on the back of the software sold by the console provider. In Japan, Nintendo has sold more than 21 million units of DS games -- the second-biggest DS software supplier has moved only 2 million units. Usually, console vendors have to grovel for the support of third-party game developers in order to gain strong sales of their game consoles, but Nintendo has the ability to sell 50 million units of its portable consoles on the back of its own game development. That's an edge no company can match."

Should be interesting to see if Nintendo can continue to translate first-party strength into solid hardware sales for Wii like it has done with the DS ...

Yesterday Ubisoft announced it would be bringing seven titles for the Nintendo Wii. Today the company revealed seven of those games, and promised to have all of those available within the console's launch window.

Including the already-announced Red Steel and Rayman Raving Rabbids, Ubisoft is giving Wii fans five more games:
    Far Cry
Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII, a military dog fight sim
Monster 4x4 World Circuit, a truck racer
Open Season, an adventure game based on the upcoming CG film by Sony Pictures Animation
GT Pro Series, a new racing IP
Seven titles for a launch window, especially the ever-popular Far Cry, is an impressive number for any developer -- even more so for a third-party developer on a Nintendo console. Ubisoft has also noted that it has many more titles in development for the Wii. Are Nintendo's third-party woes coming to an end?

IGN is also running an interview with Ubisoft's North American president Laurent Detoc who says, "We made a bet by starting development for the Wii earlier than others and we intend to maintain our advance on the platform. You can see it as a double-down move. We don't have a crystal ball but we think the Wii is going to be a huge success right away and we want to be the number-one independent publisher for Wii in 2006." Hear that EA? You've got some catching up to do. ...

A preliminary list of games that are confirmed for exhibition at this year's Tokyo Game Show was announced today by event coordinators Nikkei BP and the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association. The list covers the games and booths of 93 companies that registered by July 21 for the 2006 show, which runs from September 22-24. Currently, 140 companies are signed up, accounting for a grand total of 1,709 partition spaces.

While Sony and Microsoft's next-generation platforms are represented, there's no mention of Nintendo's Wii. However, this is only a preliminary list, and several big names--including Square Enix and Sony Computer Entertainment--have not revealed their software plans. Some heavyweights have given only vague outlines of what will be at their booths. For example, Konami promises that the "latest titles" in the Metal Gear Solid and Bemani series will be shown, but the company hasn't spilled any details.

CESA also updated the schedule for the TGS Forum, which will be held on September 22 during the show's Business Day. Capcom's Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi will headline the Characters Session, joined by Takashi Yamazaki, who directed the opening movie to Capcom's Onimusha 3 and the award-winning film Always Sanchome no Yuhi. Takeuchi and Yamazaki will share the stage with Hirofumi Inagaki, producer of Namco Bandai's Mobile Suit Gundam-themed PS3 shooter.

Judge dismisses strip club's accusations of trademark infringement

A US district judge has dismissed claims by a Los Angeles strip club that Rockstar Games breached copyright by designing a similar looking virtual strip club for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

According to documents obtained by US website Gamasutra, E.S.S. Entertainment - owners of The Play Pen club - filed suit against Rockstar in April of last year. The suit claimed that the strip club in GTA, which is titled The Pig Pen, represented trademark infringement, due to its similar name, logo, awning and 'Totally nude' advertising slogan.

Rockstar conceded that its artists worked from photographs of real life LA locations - including the Play Pen - when designing the game, but argued that they "changed the names, building designs and overall look and feel of the locations... To make them fit the virtual, cartoon-style world of San Andreas and the series' irreverent tone."

Rockstar also referred to the lawsuit MCA Records successfully defended over the song Barbie Girl, when the judge ruled that trademark rights "do not entitle the owner to quash an unauthorised use of the mark by another who is communicating ideas or expressing points of view."

Judge Margaret Morrow agreed with Rockstar's argument, ruling that, "Defendants' use of the Play Pen trade dress and trademark bears some artistic relevance to the game, and does not explicitly mislead consumers as to the source or content of the game." Rockstar, Judge Morrow said, was therefore entitled to claim a First Amendment defence.

Perhaps the controvery surrounding GTA: San Andreas will finally die down now, following both this legal decision and the ruling by the FTC over the Hot Coffee scandal. But chances are Rockstar will be in the news again soon - the company recently confirmed that controversial school-based game Bully is on track for release by the end of the year. ...

The always-refreshing RetroGaming with Racketboy has an article up looking at some of the defining games for the much-maligned Virtual Boy game console. The all-red screenshots are meant to remind you of all the 'good times' that could be had with Nintendo's most resounding failure. From the article:
"If there is one game that I think utilizes the 3D element the best, it would have to be Teleroboxer. This Mech/Punch-Ount hybrid game should be a welcome addition to any Virtual Boy game library. Much like Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, you have different attacks, blocking ability, and the need to discover your opponent's weaknesses and openings in their fighting patterns." ...

Gamasutra's latest 'Analyze This' column has game industry analysts commenting on the rise of casual games, asking whether simpler games that take less time to play may be vital to game industry growth. David Cole of DFC Intelligence disagrees that any one genre or game type is vital, suggesting: 'A key for the industry is being able to diversify.... For the N64 and GameCube, Nintendo focused primarily on its big franchises and didn't have the same level of diversity. The platform that did was the Sony PS2. Which platform could work as a karaoke machine, allowed you to put yourself in the game, had all kinds of trivia products? The reason the PSOne and PS2 sold [so well] was diversity.' Is this the key to working out who wins in next-gen?"

With that in mind is Diversity the reason that the DS is selling so many worldwide and the reason why the Wii with its different controllers will revolutionize the console world. Got a comment then lets have it ...
