You knew this was going to be a big one, and it’s getting big scores to match the hype. Rehash? Maybe. Fun? See what the critics are saying:

IGN: 9.5/10 ”Mario Kart DS’s production value is almost staggering. The development team worked an unbelievable amount of focus in nearly every aspect of this racing design, pushing a huge amount of effort in both the single player experience as well as the multiplayer competition.”
GameSpot: 9.2/10 “The online play is undoubtedly the icing on an especially yummy cake.”
1UP: 9/10 ”Once you find a working connection, once you accept the fact that online matches are limited to four people.. once you get playing…all complaints drift away.”
Yahoo! Games: 4.5/5 ”Multiplayer Mario Kart is, in a nutshell, an absolute blast. If you want to see a room full of grown men and women revert into hyperactive, obscenity-laden teenagers, just put the game in their hands and let them go at it.”
Gamerz Edge: 9.6/10 “If I could award Mario Kart DS an eleven on Fun Factor, I absolutely would. This game is simply the most fun I have had in years as a gamer.”
GameRankings composite: 93%. Pretty freakin’ good.

Nintendo delivered a one-two combo to its handheld faithful today by launching one of the DS's most anticipated features with one of its most anticipated games. Now, DS owners can compete against others over the Internet in Mario Kart DS using the freshly enabled Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

Previously, multiplayer competition was limited to the handheld's local Wi-Fi capabilities, meaning that gamers who wanted to duke it out against others needed to be within a specified physical proximity of one another. With the new free-of-charge Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, DS owners can challenge others across the globe using a wireless Internet connection that supports Nintendo's service.

"Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection removes the barriers that have prevented many mainstream players from going online," says Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales & marketing. "We have made the service incredibly simple to use and free at select hotspot locations--but this is just the beginning."

Those select locations Fils-Aime refers to include almost 6,000 McDonald's restaurants across the country. Gamers can also do some online racing from home with their wireless Internet connections, or they can use a hardwired high-speed connection, a PC, and the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector, which is available for purchase online at Nintendo.com for $34.99. More information on the service is available at Nintendowifi.com.

The release of Mario Kart DS marks the debut of the series on the DS. Racers can speed along more than 30 tracks, including several that will be recognizable from other Mario Kart games. Once again, Nintendo's portly plumber leads the roster of playable characters as they aim for the checkered flag, dropping banana peels and launching Koopa Troopa shells at the competition.

Online support for the game will let up to four players across the globe challenge one another. By exchanging friend codes, players can easily search for buddies online. In local area wireless action, up to eight players can join a multiplayer session using just one copy of the game. ...

A new regulatory filing by Tiger Telematics, the US parent company of Gizmondo Europe, has revealed that the firm's sales immediately after the launch of the Gizmondo handheld earlier this year were extremely weak.

The 10-Q document filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission yesterday provides financial details of the six month and three month periods ended June 30th of this year, which includes the launch of Gizmondo in the UK on March 19th.

Revenues for the six month period - which includes over three months of Gizmondo sales in the UK - were $1.5 million, with the firm admitting that "only minor sales amounts have been recorded" during the period.

That may be something of an understatement regarding the console, which is being sold through a flagship retail store in London's prestigious Regent Street shopping area as well as through a number of retail partners nationwide..

Based on the $1.5 million revenue figure, it seems likely that under 5,000 units of the Gizmondo console were sold during its first three months at retail - and even that figure is optimistic, as it assumes that an extremely high proportion of the units sold were the cheaper Smart Adds enabled devices, and that the vast majority of the revenue came from hardware sales, rather than software and accessories.

However, it should be noted that the company describes the UK launch as being of a "limited production version" of the device, with the US launch in late October described as "full-scale production".

The firm also recently claimed that it had seen a significant spike in sales of the console, around the time that it announced its plans to float on the NASDAQ stock exchange - plans which it says are still proceeding despite the recent departure of key executives Stefan Eriksson and Carl Freer and the subsequent revelations in the press regarding the convictions of several former staff members for their involvement in mafia activities in Sweden. ...

Following the announcement detailing the Xbox 360 launch titles available in Europe in December, Microsoft has revealed its US software package, which includes an additional three games on the shelves from day one.

In addition to the fifteen titles heading for Europe, US gamers will be able to buy Ridge Racer 6, NBA 2K6 and NHL 2K6 when the next generation console launches throughout North America on November 22nd.

2K Games had initially intended to offer the NBA and NHL games in both territories from launch, though it seems the conversion from NTSC to PAL formats has taken a little longer than anticipated. The company has managed to complete the snowboarding title, Amped 3, which is confirmed as a launch title in both the US and the EU.

Both territories will have instant access to the improved Xbox Live service, including new casual games and downloads from the Xbox Live Arcade service. Accessories and console face-plates available from day one will also be similar in the US and Europe.

The full US launch day line-up of 18 titles consists of:

    Amped 3
    Call of Duty 2
    Condemned: Criminal Origins
FIFA Soccer 06 Road to 2006 FIFA World Cup
    GUN
    Kameo: Elements of Power
    Madden NFL 06
    NBA 2K6
    NBA Live 06
    Need for Speed Most Wanted
    NHL 2K6
    Perfect Dark Zero
    Peter Jackson's King Kong
    Project Gotham Racing 3
    Quake 4
    Ridge Racer 6
    Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06
    Tony Hawk's American Wasteland
Microsoft confirmed that several further titles, including Dead or Alive 4, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and Ridge Racer 6 are due to hit European shores "in the weeks after launch and beyond." To date, confirmation on the software titles available for the Japanese console launch on December 10th has yet to be announced. ...

The first reviews for Xbox 360 games are starting to hit the web! 1UP has reviewed Kameo, Project Gotham Racing 3, FIFA Soccer 2006, NBA 2K6, and Amped 3, while IGN has reviewed Madden NFL 06, Kameo, and NBA 2K6. Judging from both sets of reviews, it looks like Project Gotham Racing 3 - which scored a 10/10 on 1UP - is the only sure winner of the 360 launch games thus far

The Nintendo DS edition of Viewtiful Joe features a brand new storyline introducing Joe's sister Jasmine and puts players to the task in saving Captain Blue's Hollywood show after a sinister group steals it away. The Nintendo DS' hardware will be put to use as the development team is bringing to life the familiar cel-shaded environment the series is known for. The two screens will keep track of the action in two viewpoints and the touch panel is used to solve puzzles and pull off special moves. A new "Power Split" move debuts here, which requires that you draw lines across the screen.
