Why are some devices unable to upgrade to Windows 10 at launch?

With the launch of Windows 10 just around the corner, it seems some users may not be able to update their devices with the new operating system (OS) straight away.
When the OS launches on July 29th, Microsoft has revealed that not all devices will receive the update then, and instead it will be slowly scaling out updates.
Microsoft will ‘start notifying reserved systems in waves’ from July 29th.
Terry Myerson, executive VP of Microsoft’s OS division, said in a blog post: “Starting on July 29, we will start rolling out Windows 10 to our Windows Insiders.
”From there, we will start notifying reserved systems in waves, slowly scaling up after July 29th. Each day of the roll-out, we will listen, learn and update the experience for all Windows 10 users.”
This news comes after the firm revealed plans to have one billion Windows 10 devices by 2018.
Myerson also revealed that Microsoft will give a build of Windows 10 to its OEM partners as well as retailers across the world.
In other Microsoft news, the firm has announced an agreement expanding on a prior patent licensing arrangement with electronics and ceramics manufacturer Kyocera Corporation.
The partnership also resolves a patent infringement lawsuit brought earlier this year in the US District Court.
