Studies indicate that the lumbar lordosis must be preserved while sitting and there is a strong association between back pain and sitting posture. (Candy et al 2004; Linton et al 1994; Salminen et al 1992; Corlett and Gregg 1994; Mandal AC 1985)

Reports published by Back Care (the charity for healthier backs), conclude that sustained poor posture is "probably the key environmental determinant of back pain in children and adolescents".
