Basic help with spec

Hi Guys,
A very easy one for you PSP experts:
My son wants to buy a PSP with his own hard earned cash for games playing only - he's got an iPod and we've got in-car dvd.
The target price/spec seems to be £150 for a Jap basic model - will he really need the giga pack, and if so is it best bought with the machine or in a couple of months time (as these things only ever get cheaper)?
Does the firmware version really make that much difference in this case?

Is he interested in playing homebrew and emulation or just psp games you would pick up from the store ? if psp games are his only intrest then any psp pack will bejust fine
