Homebrew or no Homebrew??? That is the question!!!!

I have a PSP slim, had the pandora battery thing done from a friend, but the PSP stopped working after a while. I reset the factory settings.
Now i want to change it again, so the question.... do i need to install a homebrew before i start following the pandora battery tutorial???

in order for the pandora/mms trick to work you have to do it with a psp that already has cfw.
