Last year SpiderWeb Software released the Blades of Exile suite as opensource, this is a game editor and player in one. It lets you create isometric RPGs.
The original sourcecode is here and updated ports for Mac & Windows can be found here.
Would there be any hope at all of getting a port of this to the NDS? I don't suppose it'd be too demanding, however I've been surprised before.
