Wifi does it actually work at all?

Ok, I've been at friend's houses, McDonalds, Coffee shops, businesses, hot spots in town, etc. The DS WILL NOT for the life of me, connect to the net.

At first it searches for a signal, fine that works always. Next it wants to run a test. Ok, it fails after 5 LONG minutes of testing. Everything is DHCP, why would I need to configure anything? If I do configure then I can't save because no matter how correct my settings are, it claims that the settings are not correct so I have to cancel out.

We've updated all routers we could, etc. Nothing works, why?
