The Pirate Bay gets political

Almost a year on from the supposed shutdown of former bittorrent search giant The Pirate Bay, the site has been thrown an unlikely lifeline that could see its long-term future safeguarded.
The site has long been a poster child for Swedish political body The Pirate Party, and now the group has stepped up to become The Pirate Bay’s official ISP.
Furthermore, it hopes that were it to get any of its MPs elected to government in the Swedish general election this September it can go one further.
“The Swedish Constitution is often ignored, but it contains an interesting detail,” a statement on the Piratpartiet website reads. “It says that MPs can not be sued or prosecuted for something that is done as part of their political mandate.
“In practice, this implies total immunity for any political action taken within this working environment. Some of the Pirate Party's prospective MPs intend to use this to host the entire Pirate Bay from inside the parliament, if today's operators of the site accept this and if we win a place in parliament in the Swedish elections.


“The Pirate Bay is actually both legitimate and legal already today, so technically no such immunity should be needed, but it is a practical way to get a short respite from the copyright industry's legal barrage. The Pirate Bay would then sail with immunity until copyright laws have been reduced and the site's legal status is clarified. There is also an important symbolic value in running the site from inside the parliamentary building.”
Piratpartiet argues that it stands for “several important values” – information security, freedom of expression and Sweden’s industrial future.
“The Pirate Bay is a global icon for freedom of speech, next generation of jobs, and future industries,” Piratpartiet adds.
“Naturally, the previous generation of industries feel threatened by this icon. Certainly, it is only one web site among thousands, but it is an important symbol. This symbolic value is precisely why we want to make it a national industrial interest by putting the servers inside the Swedish Parliament.”
