question about sys menu

i'm running at 3.1 still
because it's easier for my kids to understand picking out a disk, than choosing a game from a menu.
if i update to the new 4.3, is there a way to retain that ability? i think i remember staying at 3.1 cause 4.2 wasn't going to let me use backup disks.
is this still true?

ok, is it a stupid question? or just that no one knows?
