Xbox 360 'can't read the update from your storage device' during update.

I was prompted to update my 360 the other day with update 9199 and it downloaded onto my usb storage device, then the console reset and it began installing only to fail halfway through and then when i turned the console on next i got the following error before it could even reach dashboard -

'can't read the update from your storage device'
23EF-3143-2680-0700-C000-0034

I have tried downloading the update from the internet and burnt it to a disc only to get the same error, i have also downloaded it directly onto a usb stick and still no luck.

If anyone could help i'd appreciate it.

(edit: while it shows that error screen i ejected the disc then put it back in while console was still on and it says its doing the update for about 5 seconds then goes back to the error screen, this exact same thing happens when i try the usb method
