ok just got my son a new psp , fortuantly the code on the side is WS259 , it has no firmware 'letter' there though , any idea how i can tell what firmware it is without opening it? (being a pressie n all!)

i sold my old 1.5 version for silly money a while back btw before they found a way to hack the later ones!

That one is a letter K, which means if box-fresh 2.60 non-TA-082 MB my friend.
Means you can downgrade to 1.5
cool , thats nice to know , for reference i got it from play.com yesterday , it was the base unit for £129.00 , maybe there older spec models , who knows :).
They are older spec models you are lucky to get one like that
well not totally lucky , i did phone up play.com and request one with that version number if possible :P
he said that they didnt have any old stock but maybe he sorted it out off the phone :D.
for the downgrade im reading the 2.6 version can only be done with GTA? or can i upgrade it to 2.71 then revert back to 1.5? from what ive read the ones with 2.6 on from the box cant be done with the 2.6 downgrader.
Yes you can update to 2.71 then downgrade that way

To start the update just create a UPDATE folder in your game folder than place the eboot there
I believe you have more chance of getting an older FW if you go for the BASE pack, my girlfriend got her's free with her mobile phone as a deal and it was a brand spanking 2.01!!! and this was only last week, to think sony will be V un happy, lol.
The PSP'S with the mobile phone deal always have the best firmware
