FFVII Save Problems

Hey I just downloaded the first disk of Final Fantasy VII and it plays fine. I just have no idea how to save the game. I arrive at the first save point and it says to press the menu button to save.

I have pressed every button on my psp and tried adjusting the control configuration to no avail. Please help!!!
