Wanting to make my own controller, need help

That maple bus sure is a mother. I was wondering if anyone has posted circuitry and software that emulates a joystick for the dreamcast. I'm trying to build a custom arcade stick that talks to the dreamcast, ps3, ps2, xbox, xbox360 all natively. I have some adapters, but they are only ps2-> dc. If I could design my own, then I can make it operate with the least amount of lag (I'm a fighting game fan). I have researched the maple bus, but I'm a bit fearful to tackle it. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!
