White R4 not working - chinese characters?

I bought a R4 over the internet, I am using a micro SD with it that is known to work (with my other R4), and when I turn it on, it displays some chinese (or japanese or korean??) text on the touch screen and the usual R4 logo on the top screen, and i can't go any further, even though i try pressing all the different buttons and touching the writing on the touch-screen.

Has anyone else had this problem? How could i fix it?

edit: I have tried and failed with the English and Korean firmwares both version 1.10. If anyone still has v1.08, i'd appreacite a link or something...
