M1000 performance is on par with holux 236, and use the same cable.
I catch satellites immediately, and inside my house, I'll get 5 satellites no prob. Outside I have 8 locked out of 10 available. Well worth the lower price. Speed is accurate it verified my 4 mph difference in my spedometer. It's is supposed to be cheaper than the 236 but reports seem to say its faster and possibly better for a lower price.
I think the 290 is great. I usually get a good 3-4 bar lock in about 5 mins if I am driving in my car. 2-3 if I am just standing in one spot outside.
Mapthis! is an amazing program and combined with the 290 it is a cheap solution to your gps needs. I would definitely just recommend the 290 It has been great for me.
I looking better solution than 290, on open air is good lock, but for me in close building city lock sat. not fast...
I was so amazed by my new PSP-290 with MapThis .499 that I put it in my pocket for a bycicle ride and turned the GPS rec mode on.
At the first stop i discovered that the PSP290 found the st in ~ 7 min and was writing all my way on a bycicle path through Ottawa.
But if you have even small roof above you - you immediately have a "circle" instead of the dot.
But Map This is the best.
Deniska - thanks a lot! Really nice job!
The only problem I have - unstability. It can freez any moment.
I'm waiting for 0.5 - Deniska, will it be more stable?
On June 13 it was posted that
"The 0.5 version should be available within a week or so". Or so? Or SO? :)
May be there are some ways to "stabilize" MapThis?
Or it's just my problem? May be more space on MS? Maybe smth else?
We create mini-usb extander for PSP-290 and quality of signal increase a LOT!!! 9 sat - 8 fix, 5 bars in 1-2min!
And I'm setup firmware to 3.52 M33 - realy great stability! no one down of MapThis!
Im using M1000 on cfw 3.52 M33 #2, the fastest i timed is 36sec i got signal from the time i on my M1000. Its a clear sky, open carpark.
Here are my steps:
1) Got into my car, on M1000 (started timing).
2) On psp connect cable(M1000 not connected yet).
3) 36sec later my M1000 started to blink (means its fixed on satellites).
4) Run mapthis (ver 0.49) and connected M1000.
5) And... my location is shown correctly.
If u ask me what is the strength of signal or whats the fix on satellites... i have no idea. All i know is that its working. And so long its working i dont really care the strength and signal.
I have tested the M1000 at tunnel to. Was running fine untill i got into a tunnel. Signal lost (the icon shows in mapthis changed) as soon as i entered it. Took around 10mins to get pass it. Just as im out of tunnel, in less then 2sec and signal is back. Can see from mapthis, im being "teleported".
Overall i happy with my M1000. But i dont think mapthis will have any sound if using M1000. Even if mapthis ver0.5 is out, i dont think will have sound for M1000 too. If psp290 can fix on satellites just as fast as M1000, i'll be getting one then.
Just like what hookwai said. The m1000 performs way better than the psp-290. The longest it takes to lock on for me is 1min30 sec. The psp-290, however, takes 1 minutes to never locking on.
One other thing to note is that the psp-290 loses signal under a bridge, while the m1000 have a constant connection. Also, I get full bars on the m1000 and the psp-290 gets about 3 or 4 at most for me.
Deniska also noted in another post was that to watch out for some holux products due to some being defected so make sure you buy from someone who will do returns as a precaution.
Overall, I would choose m1000 any day over the psp-290. Only thing is that there'll be no sound, but that doesn't bother me.
