Free boot disk/flip top mod?

i've got the flip top part down, but, i read somewhere that when you turn a little white wheel around under the disk tray (instead of buying swapmagic or whatever), it can get rid of that "insert a ps2 or ps1 disk!" screen and let you play backups. is this true?
i'm trying to run a guitar hero 2 mod disk.
if not, is there any way i can do this for free? haha
i'm kinda cheap.

That trick only works for PS1 games.
