Id Software sets up mobile division

id Software, famous for first-person shooter franchises Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein, has announced that it has formed a new division, id Mobile.

The company will work on mobile versions of Quake and Wolfenstein, as well as a sequel to Doom RPG, which was already successful on the platform.

According to a report in USA Today, id co-founder John Carmack believes now is the right time for mobiles.

"We are operating on the assumption that mobile gaming has a potential for huge growth. It's at a tipping point. Everybody has a phone, and almost every phone is powerful enough to do good games on it."

Doom RPG has sold more than 1 million copies in the past two years, while its other mobile title Orcs and Elves has sold over 400,000.

Carmack's wife, Katherine Anna Kang, who was formerly id's director of business development, will take up the role of id Mobile's president.

id Software is currently developing a new title called Rage, while Roger Avary has been confirmed as the director for a Wolfenstein movie.
