Mobile malware roundup: Panda uncovers scam using fake WhatsApp ads on Facebook

Four of the top security software firms have reported on the threats that smartphone and tablet owners face.
Panda Security has uncovered a potentially massive attack on Android takes advantages of Facebook’s ‘suggested posts’ by creating one advertising WhatsApp.
When users access Facebook from their Android mobile device, they will see different messages under the title ‘Suggested Post’ advertising WhatsApp tips. If the intended victim clicks on any of these ads, they are redirected to a fake version of Google Play.
Bitdefender has also uncovered some of the dangers Android users face. In a recent study, the firm found that out of 836,021 free Android apps studied, 35 per cent of them can access user locations, while almost three per cent can leak email address, five per cent can locate and over photos and ten per cent can read contact lists.
Kaspersky has found that nearly 100,000 new malicious programs for mobile devices were detected in 2013, more than double the previous year’s figures, with 98.1 per cent of all mobile malware detected in 2013 targeting Android device.
Meanwhile, Symantec has revealed that mobile malware will be ten years old this year. It all began in 2004 with the first variant of SymbOS.Cabir. The worm targeted Symbian OS, which was a very popular mobile operating system at the time.
