Complete Newbie (really I am) to Devhook on 2.71 TA-082
My first post here and hopefully this will lend a helping hand to other slow people like myself. I just got a PSP recently so all this homebrew, devhook, firmware stuff is all new to me. But I do come from a PS2 modding background.
Complete Newbie (really I am) to Devhook on 2.71 TA-082
Before we start, a big cheers to Dark_Alex, Booster, et al for their tireless work!
To get this to work I had to do 3 things to get it installed:
1. Upgrade my TA-082 2.50 original PSP to the 2.71 firmware.
I had to find the Eboot firmware on the dl.qj site. I hope it's okay if I post a link, I don't think it's illegal as it's an official firmware --> Download 2.71 Firmware
Take the eboot.pbp file and put it on your memory stick in the /psp/game/UPDATE folder (create the update folder). On the PSP XMB menu goto the Game -> Memory Stick icon and scroll down the list looking for the 2.71 firmware update icon. Select it and follow the onscreen instructions.
2. Install the HENB2 homebrew.
Download Dark_Alex's Homebrew Enabler for 2.71 (Revision B) with better binary loading from his site. Install it on your PSP as per the instructions in the README.TXT file. Read it carefully. Also there's a slight chance of bricking your PSP here as it writes to flash. Didn't happen to me but proceed with caution.
Abridged version is:
a. Copy MS_ROOT to your MS
b. In XMB -> Photo enter the HENB folder
c. You'll see a blue screen then a green screen (GOOD), red screen (BAD). If red repeat until green.
Hardware reset will clear the HENB goodness, so you have to run HENB everytime. When your PSP is in sleep mode you don't need to rerun.
Feel free to delete psppbtknf*.txt, psptknf_update and systemctrl.prx in the root of your ms and NOTHING ELSE.
3. Install Devlauncher271_2 on your MS
Download the binary from this post from Dark Alex's site here. Install it as per the readme271.txt file. It's a little cryptic so I'll explain.
a. Put the folders/files from the MS_ROOT dir, onto your PSP MS. There's a dh folder and 3 folders that go in the psp/game directory.
b. You need to get firmwares for 1.50 and 2.71. This is the part that's "tricky" because it's not included in the file. I searched the net and "found" them somewhere but when tried it didn't work. I searched elsewhere and found a set that worked. All I can say is search torrents and elsewhere (as an aside I love usenet, alt*ahem*binaries*cough*sony.psp).
c. Install the firmwares into the dh directory on your MS.
The start procedure is as follows:
1. Start the PSP to the XMB
2. Goto Photo and run the HENB2 if you haven't already. You get the blue screen and it reboots the PSP to the XMB
3. Goto Game -> Memory Stick and select the devhook launcher 4xx one ... not the 0.46 one.
4. It'll give you the PSP start game thing and you should see the devhook by booster black menus!
Yay! Your PSP's been h4x0red!
Now What??
I have to admit that when I saw the devhook screen I was pretty happy that it worked but I had no idea what I was supposed to do. We can't talk about some "i*o things" so I won't.
I was actually just hoping to get to a 1.50 firmware XMB screen and I was having problems. Here's what I did.
1. From the devhook menu, select Firmware and select 1.50. Press circle and it will bump you back to the main devhook menu
2. Select Start and press circle
3. The screen will go black and you should see the MS red led flashing. If it doesn't or turns off after a few seconds then the firmware you selected is no good. Try to find another firmware and put it in the dh folder.
4. You will then see that pink/red XMB and you're in 1.50!!! Pat yourself on the back.
Devhook again
From the 1.50 XMB start the 0.46 devhook launcher again. Goto Game -> Memory Stick and select Devhook 0.46 launcher. You'll be back at the devhook menu.
From here you can jump to the 2.71 firmware by going to Firmware and selecting the 2.71. Press circle and from the devhook main menu select start. You'll be at a red/ping 2.71 XMB.
To load a "thing" devhook menu menu goto UMD Select and pick your thing. Hit Start and you're back at the 1.50 XM. Select Game -> UMD.
What I don't know
- From devhook to 1.50, can you only load 1.50 things or newer as well from the 1.50 XMB?
- From devhook to 1.50 and devhooking again to 2.71 ... what can you do? I can't mount a "thing"
- From the devhook to 1.50, can you load homebrews like GPSP0.7?
I have to admit that I've just scratched the surface of this stuff and I'm sure great features will be coming out soon that are better. However, I don't know where to find more help on this. Any clarifications would be much appreciated.
