My 40GB is fine. I agree that bricked is used too often, you wouldn't say your PC is bricked if a format fixed it.

My PAL 40GB PS3 is fine too after the update.
My NTSC 60GB PS3 is working great too. The only problem that I've noticed were missing icons on the MGS4 theme at random times.
