so, buying a game would cost you import duty? because its over £18? i thought it depended on the weight of the thing you have purchased? because i am ordering a game on Saturday and i plan on spending £30 (cos thats all i got) and if i am going to be charged for import duty; a) how much will it be and b) how do u pay for it?
I have been charged VAT and duty for goods bought over the Internet, why is this?
Any goods purchased from outside the EC are liable for duty and in some cases VAT. If you have been sent a gift and the value is under £36 you will not be liable, over that amount you will be charged depending on the product. For purchases bought by yourself with a value over £18 you may have to pay duty depending on the product; it may also be liable to VAT. Under that amount you will not be liable.
According to C&E the if the console plugs in to a TV then it is duty required, if handheld then duty free code 9504909000, games of an optical media nature are subject to Duty, of technically PSP but if the games are one off and can't be recorded and the fact they are in a "Cartridge" then duty free again. These items are VAT chargable. Call HMCE on 0845 010 9000 and go through to the toys section.
It is a very complicated area, that's why HM gets so much money ;)
Open to interptitation, Fact is i didn't pay any Duty but only paid £22 VAT as items marked down.
A) VAT at 17.5% B) the carrier will pay the charge on you behalf and possibly charge you for doing it, then you pay them.Quote:

DHL charge duty on behalf of the Customs and Excise and it is payable on most goods imported from outside the EU.
3.2 Do I have to pay duty or VAT on goods sent to me from outside the EC?
Most goods arriving in the UK from outside the EC are liable to any or all of these charges:
* Customs Duty;
* Excise Duty; and
* VAT.
These must be paid whether:
* you purchase the goods or receive them as a gift;
* the goods are new or used; or
* the goods are for your private use or for sale.

OK leggy, i see it say "most goods" not all goods. Two questions, have you spoken to HMCE or just looked up details on their web site? if so what was the 10 digit code they gave you? mine was 9504909000
I spoke to HMCE this morning and asked all the pertinent questions about handhelds, consoles and games. The answer i got back i have already posted along with the 10 digit ref code for PSP (handheld console).
If you say duty has to be paid i'd better phone HMCE and put them right ;)
Here's another reason to call them and ask, example of import duty from outside EU
MP3 Player/recorder (Sound Only) 2% duty
MP3 Player/recorder (incorporating a radio) 10%
Palm held portable Free
Palm held portable with calculator 3.7%
HMCE is barmy and it no good using generalisation such as "Most Goods" because you just need to look at the above items to realise it's all barmy. Why do you have to pay 8% more for MP3 with a radio?!?!?!?!?
