Mine is modelnumber 1001 or was...LOL... It had no number in the umd area...

Like you, the screen went blank and the memory stick access light flashed intermittently for a couple of minutes - but in my case a blue screen came up saying the settings were corrupted, press O to continue. That was with a UK PSP-1003G1, factory 2.50 with a 2.60 upgrade applied just before running the 2.60 downgrader.
