Monitor w/o headphone jack, wants to use headphones.

Hey guys, I recently purchased an HD monitor (Hanns-G HG-216DP0) that came with built-in HDMI. I use it for my PC and my PS3 and it's just great.

There's only one problem though... it's in the living room and it doesn't have a headphone jack. For the PC side, this isn't a problem as my PC has a headphone jack; but this isn't exactly great for the PS3 side.

Do you guys know of a *cheap* workaround for this problem? I'd love to play all of my games at high volumes without bothering my family.

Does it have stereo outputs? A red one and white one on the back.

I would imagine it does. Perhaps you can tell us what sockets/jacks it does have. If it has the audio outputs mentioned then you'll be able to get some cables that will either link into similar sockets on the back of a hi-fi so you can pop your headphones into that or some that take the red and white (right & left stereo) and end up with a stereo headphone jack type end. You might need a male/female converer bit to then put on that end so the headphones will go in.

It really depends on what outputs your TV has. You might luck out if it has none, but I doubt that as most TV have various ways of connecting to home cinema systems/hi-fis etc.

The only ports that it came with are:
1 VGA
1 HDMI
1 Audio-in

I have tried connecting my earphones into the Audio-in, but as I expected... it didn't work? If you need any more information, please let me know.

Im assuming you don't have a surround sound system with a headphone output…

You need to use the optical/toslink output of the ps3 to feed your headphones the signal.

Options:

So called "surround sound" headphones with digital decoders
such as:

A separate digital decoder to take the digital optical signal and output to your regular headphones

unless the ps3 doesn't allow both hdmi and the component cable to work at the same time, sorry I can't test it out since im hooked up through component and don't have an hdmi cable

btw these Y-cables are cheap like 4 bucks

that is a cheaper option.[if possible]

Of course you would need to change the audio settings every time you wish to use either sound setup. Using optical cable with a splitter would allow output to both a sound system and the headphones without needing to adjust settings or cables.

The PS3 allows both HDMI and component output at the same time. Thanks guys, I'm going to stop in at RadioShack tomorrow and see what they have.

Wouldn't using one of those y cable things leave you with a quiet signal and unable to adjust the volume outside of the in-game audio settings?

It's a line out not a post-amp headphone out, if its loud enough for you to be happy I guess its ok, I would have thought it would be pretty quiet without going through an amp though.

If its too quiet then do you have any old (powered, obviously) PC speakers lying around with a headphone jack? You could use them as an amp.

I use the line out from my TV to go to a pair of old (they came with a pentium pro 200mhz PC I got in 96-97 or so, pretty beefy things) PC speakers, they give much better treble and bass response than the cheap internal speakers that are only good for mid range.

Well, I usually have my devices (when connected to earphones) at the maximum, so I think I'll be fine.
