Disregard all of the effects and modes that are available they will only serve to degrade the image quality. If this is your first HDTV then you will also be more suited to slightly muted colours and low brightness. Best advice is search around avforums.com and see if there are any reviews and usually there is a thread dedicated to optimal settings for picture and sound which will greatly improve the performance of whichever TV you choose.
