PlayStation Network to support homebrew.

There's been a lot of media about the features of the up coming Playstation 3 and the Playstation Network. If you've been hiding under a rock, some of the more important news is that the Playstation 3 is being released world wide in November. It will be supporting the Blu-Ray standard, provide high definition 1080p television output and contain the revolutionary Cell processor.
Some of the more interesting news is centred around the newly announced Playstation Network. A complete online network to support the Playstation family of devices, Playstation 3, Playstation Portable and Playstation 2. Sony Computer Entertainment President Phil Harrison outlined some of the features during the Game Developers Conference recently. Features disclosed included Instant Messaging, voice and video chat, aswell as movie and music downloads. However, none of these features directly affect the homebrew PSDEV community.

Of interest to our community is that the Playstation 3 will come with Linux pre-installed on the hard disk. As some of you will be aware, the most recent published Linux release comes with Cell support built in. Up until now, it hasn't been clear what support for homebrew PSDEV users the Playstation 3 will provide. Thanks to an anonymous employee of Sony Japan, I can now confirm that Playstation Network will support the homebrew community! This is an excerpt of what I received a few days ago.

As you probably know, the PS3 will ship with the latest linux kernel
installed on the HDD. There has been a lot of debate in here to decide
if linux will be open to users. But thankfully Ken has really been
pushing to open up the platform. They plan on releasing this info
during E3, but I knew how important it was to you guys. I can only
give you the basics. You can find out the rest of the details
in may.

Phil released a lot of details about the Playstation Network at GDC,
but left some details out. In addition to the
social-networking stuff like IM, voice and video chat, Playstation
Network will let users upload their own content to sell to the
community. But what is really great is that the platform will be
open, so that you can develop games on linux, then upload and
even sell them. We're going to open up the full micopayment system
to everyone. Guys like you will be able to develop mini games
and sell them for 10c each.

I did some checks with a couple of people before posting this, and I can 100% confirm that it is legit! There was also the following slide displayed at GDC showing the open internet business philosophy.

From what people tell me, it seems they can offer these features because linux allows them to lock down some parts of the Playstation 3. All I can say is, thanks Sony for finally realising the importance of homebrew. Playstation l33t, here we come.

If this is the real deal it is exciting. About selling the games though.... 10c each? Would be better if you could set your own price. Some games that have been worked on for months may deserve at least a few dollars per download.

I don't really see the reason why Sony would be doing this on the PS3 and not the PSP. Simple homebrew games would be better on the go than on your $500 (maybe even more) gaming machine. I don't see why people are so worked up over the PS3. First off, the pictures that look so amazing aren't in real time, at least Microsoft didn't do the same with the 360. Second, UMD movies are dying, so what's the point of Sony creating yet another movie format? Many now PS3 fans will reconsider purchasing the system since it will cost so much, even many PS3 fans I know say it will cost $700. Go ahead, argue with me, but I don't care.

They're really screwing with the GPL there... same as Tivo, taking an Open Source OS, not paying a penny, and then modifying it so that others can't make changes to it?, screwy.

Plus, it's not like they're doing us a favour, they're forced to provide us with the source code, which means the PS3 will be hacked sooner or later.

What they want to do, is to bring coders over to their side by allowing them to sell software, then make a cut on it....

I think I'll buy a revolution.

Sony will NEVER support homebrew and i would be extremly surprised to see Linux on the PS3 so.... April's fool. Nice try though.

the ps3 wont be more than 400 i guess cause the competition is at max 400 and they are releasing it late but it could be more cause it is gonna be allot better

The ps3 is supposed to use linux from what I know. I dunno if the homebrew thing is true but I would certainly be happy. :)

sony embracing homebrew they probably figuring out that homebrew is what selling psp"s so they figure have it on the ps3 and it might persuade more buyers and ohh yea april fools thats good one

Im sure with the linux thing, Im still not sure how they plan to lock it down, chances are they will do the same old thing they did with the PS2... because there was a university that set up about 100 PS2s using the linux HD addon and ran it as a physics server.

I'm not sure how Sony would do this. I understood that there was some sort of Indi developer program that would be starting up for the 360 and there "may" be a chance where sony pulls up a similar attempt, but its highly unlikely that it will be for 10 cents... chances are there will be a higher moderation system. Who knows...

What ever the PS3 fans say, the PS3 will cost more than $400. A stand alone blu-ray player costs like $800.
