You will LOVE this...

People talk of web browsers for 1.50 users, and no one wants to build one from scratch...blah blah...well, in case you haven't noticed (which it appears that most haven't) Mozilla Firefox is open-source. So why not port it to PSP? It would seem that only minor changes would be necessary (WiFi networking, etc.), and everyone would use it. It would be even better if it supported built-in plugins (QuickTime, Flash!) and such.

Besides, Links2 isn't really that great, anyway...

The memory 'leakage' problem of Firefox would be my main concern. A more lightweight open source browser would be a better choice.

You have to get used to it. But it is the best browser 1.5's got. So i'm happy. But a Fire fox would be a great browser to port if possible.

Firefox will take a large memory footprint (numbers have varied between 50-200mb in general use). It is something about keeping the history of tabs in memory but has always been classed by end users as a memeory 'leakage'. The odd thing is that it has been in the build for a while.

I don't think Links2 is that great. It has bad scrolling, EXTREMELY slow saving to Memory Stick, rarely shows pages as they are supposed to be shown, has no connection choices, leaves cursor shadows everywhere, sometimes drops the connection altogether for no apparent reason, and has a graphic keyboard that is less-than-ideal (a simple virtual qwerty like in psp-pda plz?). That is why I am psyched to here that MPH is working on a no-crash, no-bug firmware launcher. Then people would start going like crazy to obtain modules for 2.70 to have Flash support.

That's not taking into account of the Virtual Memory used either, mine has now hit 91 and 98 mb respectively. Some of it may be due to the OS but even 33mb usage is too much for a PSP.

so allow the firefox to use the memory stick for a cache.. that would allow for all data to be held seperate... also people since your talking about a full fledged internet explorer, remember that shockwave and flash should work on it...

No Links is a full on graphical browser, try it out. And from what I know on the subject it would be quite hard to use the memory stick as a cache.

Really its all about loading things into memory.

32mb isnt enough memory for firefox but surely there is a way around the memory leakages or to make a limited version for the PSP..

Generally speakign we only have 16mb to work with unless other parts are loaded after the eboot is loaded. Examples like Monkey64 where any rom bigger than 16 mb freezes because the PSP shell has the other half to itself.

opening multiple pages isn't really a good idea on the PSP. It still runs out of memory too quickly. The biggest problem with using the memory stick for cache (at least from a commercial perspective) is that there's no uniformity. One person may have a 32MB stick with 24MB free, another may have a 2GB stick with 3MB free, and another still may have a 1GB stick with 500MB free. So the biggest trick will be in writing an intelligent swap file type caching. The only way to really do it at this point would be to have something predefined and have the end user modify it to his/her needs. In my experience, the end user is usually too stupid to know how to do that, even when handed step-by-step instructions. Now, I'm not saying that's anyone on this forum (not saying it's not either), but I can see the hesitence of coders to make such a thing as they will be asked 400 times a day "how do I use the instructions again?" And they only way not to be asked is to release it anonymously, and lets face it, nobody would trust it then.

So while a good idea in theory, in practice may be a bit more difficult. And due to speeds of the mem stick read/write, I wouldn't use the cache for anything other than a web browser.

Just my thoughts on the subject.

Never mind. Now that I found out what Portable VNC is, I don't need Firefox on my PSP. I can stream it from my PC!
