Rumour: PSP2 In 2010, No Mention Of Phone (For Once)

Welcome to another PSP2 rumour. This one comes courtesy of Bright Side of News, who also brought us the nVidia DSi rumour last week. BSN believe Sony began working on PSP2 in 2008 and have contracted Imagine Technologies to to implement their PowerVR SGX543 chip in a new PSP revision scheduled for release in 2010. After a few paragraphs of technical mumbo-jumbo, they speculate on the nature of the device:



After analyzing the performance at hand, it is no wonder that Sony chose to go with PowerVR for the next-generation PlayStation Portable. While the exact details of the SoC are still in question, our take is that Sony could go with quad-core setup at 400MHz [8GPixel/s], paired with a dual-core CPU based on ARM Cortex architecture. This would put Sony direct in line against Tegra-powered Nintendo DS2, PowerVR-based Apple’s iPhone 4G and Palm Pre2.

They conclude by saying they are confident the new PSP will launch within the next 12 months, although they can’t say when in order to protect their source. Then they provide a handy list that shows all the companies using ARM processors for their portable hardware in 2010:

Food for thought:

1. Is PSP2 the same as PSP-4000? I honestly can’t tell anymore. Rumour has it, though, that PSP-4000 will feature the triumphant (?) return of UMDs. So many rumours!

2. Is PSP-4000 the same as PSP Phone? Why in God’s name would a phone feature a UMD drive? Perhaps they are two different SKUs?

Looks fugly.
It's fat the speaker looks like really cheap and why is it placed in such a odd place do i have to turn the screen to hear anything clear?
Damn it looks like it only support mono sound because of 1 speaker.
Volume buttons on very stupid place damn plus have to be above minus.
And wow that control well too many buttons which looks like they are made of rubber and i can easily damage them.
Not 2 analog sticks not even 1? 0_o
It looks like a mix up of a cheap digital camera and a dreamcast vmu to me.
Believe me i like the psp i own a psp 2000 but really this concept should be burned with fire.

We have already seen this "concept" one or two years ago.

Looks stupidly crap.
Lends itself to the psp phone rumour i guess with it being psp mode with buttons either side and phone mode with all the buttons at the bottom. Either way it looks stupid.

Looks dumb. One huge speaker that only plays in Mono. Why in God's name would you want to play UMD games on this "thing"? That would be really confusing on where they would put the drive and make it work flawlessly

It's apparently false(the article), because it says PSP GO! can overclock to 480Mhz. So, don't bother reading!

Uh, but PSP Go's CPU is 480Mhz. I remember there were news about that It would help N64 emu.

If i were Sony i'd make a portable Ps2 and release games on Psn or some propietory flash card, i mean developers already have massive back catalogues and understand the Sdk, and the thing would probably sell by the absolute shed load, but we all know Sony knows best.

It was a rumor back in summer, but it was revealed that it was for the connector or something but not CPU.

Yeah the usb 2.0 transfer speed is 480mbps.
