Does OPM hate the PSP?

OPM stands for Official PlayStation Magazine. You'd think that because it's sponsored by Sony, it would have slightly inflated scores for the games. But that doesn't seem to be the case ... at all. In fact, it appears that OPM is dishing out some painfully low scores on games that have been reviewed favorably by most other publications. For example, Killzone: Liberation only got a 7.5, Ace Combat X got a 6.0, and most surprisingly of them all: Lumines II got a measly 6.0. I've been playing my review build for quite some time, and I find it to be much better than the original, and that says a lot. What's with these horribly low scores, OPM? Do they have a grudge against the PSP?

To be honest I don't think that 6 or 7.5 are 'horribly low scores' If 5 is taken to be an average game and 10 one of the best games conceivable, then there not really bad scores. It can't be expected, as it appears to be with many mainstream videogame publications, that any game which is seen as rather good by the reviewers to obtain a score representational of something close to perfect. I'm too tired and i'm probably just blabbing on, but its what i thought:P

well, the games that were noted are pretty poor games. most games on the psp are similar to others that have already been released on the system. adding little changes to a game to make it a little bit different doesn't really equal fun. Exp) Untold Leg., Untold Leg.2 and Dungeon Siege Throne Of Agony are the same game.

nah, seriously, its a bad case of bad reviewers.

It's cause they don't use homebrew, and that's pretty much 99% of what makes the PSP awesome.

i would say homebrew is 70 percent what makes psp good

well locoroco got a 9.0 a while back in opm .killzone lib. should had gotton an 8.5

OPM sucks anyway PSM is better.

If you ask me, Dungeon Siege is light years beyond Untold Legends.

But anyway, PSP games do seem to get low scores. I find that IGN.com gives good reviews on PSP games. Very thorough and informative.

OPM isnt sponsored by Sony. They pay royalties to Sony to get to use the name. They have absolutely nothing to do with Sony. Just like the 1up networks other mag Games for Windows.

Yea, I think OPM's grading is very inaccurate; PSM is better!

It is hard to say if these scores are unfair, given the fact that everyone scores differently. In my opinion, IGN scores things too high. What I mean is, a 9 and 10 should be nearly perfect games, where a 7 and 8 should be good games. 6's and 5's should be moderate to average, and 4's below should be shotty at best.

Using this method, the scores are accurate. Except, Locoroco got a 9! Lol. My girlfriend would have given it a 10, so I will accept the 9 kindly. She really loves the game... So cute... Lol.

whatever. Killzone Liberation is one of the better PSP games in a long time. I think that would be 8.5-9 area. having said that, a review is only as good as the reviewer!

i agree with some1 else post: IGN is best place for PSP game reviews. then Gamespot.

I cant understand them giving Ace Combat X a 6, its one of my fav game titles for quite a while! :(

I've learnt never to just trust a magazine review though, after all its just someones opinion and I'd rather make up my own mind.

I've learnt to mostly ignore the final scores, as the scoring is very inconsistent even within the one mag, or game review site.

I read the review's though for what's good and not good about the game, and if I like what I read I'd get it.

For example Pilot Academy, very average scores all round, around 6 to 7 (or less) - but I love it, and what the reviews said convinced me I'd like it.

That said, that scoring is low for an offical mag! There's probably some some research out there that suggests that games scored 7 or below are instantly ignored by most people who look at reviews.

I don't know how anyone can take these ratings seriously. Each to their own.

In my honest opinion, there is no game ever made that deserves 80%+, I mean 90%+ is pretty much perfect. No game is perfect and can always be improved apon, even if it is slightly better gfx of sfx, longer story lines etc.

But if they are the OFFICIAL Sony publication and dislike homebrew, it is counter-productive to dole out low scores to official games that would steer people from homebrew.

It is a conflict of interest from a business standpoint and doesn't help the PSP scene. I understand that giving these games higher scores would seem suspect since people would see favortism (Sony rating PSP games higher than other publications) but still...

the three games are the same concept. game play is pretty much the same in all three. it even goes as far as having similar menus in the game, which goes back to my original post...SAME game with little differences.
