I think it was only in American countries the MegaDrive was called the Genesis, as the Japanese commercials stated it as the MegaDrive and all over Europe it's the MegaDrive...
...Like in Asia the NES was called the FAMICOM (FamilyComputer), and in the rest of the world the Nintendo Entertainment System and in a different shape and size from the Asian release.

Well actually, the Sega console had to change its name in North America from 'MegaDrive' due to a trademark dispute, not because they wanted to be different from the rest of the world. A trademark issue was also another reason the Dreamcast in Europe had a blue swirl instead of red, since there was already a German company, Tivola, using a similar logo.
