Hello,
I'm an ex-psphomebrew user. I used the gta lcs hack back in the day, maybe 2 years ago. Then, I accidentally updated my psp. Then I sold it.
Now, I bought a new one, because being on the road is no fun with a laptop that dies after an hour of any sort of cpu stress at all (even pscs3 runs it's battery like madness!)
Anyway, I was wondering if it was at all possible to downgrade the 3.90. I want it to be like the good ole' days, playing mario 64 @ ~5 fps! lol...

Yeah you can use the Pandora Battery downgrader but you need another homebrew enabled PSP.

Yep, it modifies your battery to work as the Jigkick battery Sony uses to unbrick their PSP's.
No idea what that means!
Well that name is certainly misleading! Now I have to hunt down one of my friends who has homebrew or this hack or something.

That's what the quote says. And what they mean by a "NONBRICKED PSP" is a homebrew enabled one..Quote:

Oh lol. From what I remember bricked means useless. Like just the light works.
Pandora's Battery is regular PSP battery that has had its serial number changed to all 1's.
When the PSP boots it checks the serial number of the battery.
If it detects a battery with all 1's it goes into service mode and attempts to boot some files from a specially formated memory stick.
You can still use the memory stick as normal after its been formated.
The Battery can technically still be used as normal if you further modify the memory stick,
other wise it will need to have its serial number restored if you want to use it as normal again.
Making the memory stick is easy with an application like this:
Pandora CMD 150 371 380
There are basically 3 versions of the memory stick.
Each one has the ability to directly flash the PSP to either 150, 371 or 380.
However, the Battery is a little harder to get.
1. It must be created on a modified PSP that can run the application that changes the serial number
2. or it can be hard modded by snipping a few pins on the batteries eeprom that disables the serial number.
Suffice to say the later is much harder to reverse.
3. You can also buy a battery from Datel that is specially made only for this purpose

What makes Pandora so special?
1. It has the ability to un-brick almost any PSP.
2. Flash any PHAT PSP to 1.5, 3.71M33 or 3.80M33
Remember that SLIM PSP's can only be flashed with 3.71M33 or 3.80M33
3. Make full "NAND" dumps of your PSP
This makes it possible to quickly return to any PSP firmware version you have made a dump / backup of.
A NAND refers to the chip that contains firmware or operating system of your PSP.
So it really makes sense to get one.

Just like Xandu said you will need a modified PSP to change the batteries serial number which you don't have.
You have 2 other options available to you.

So I have been trying to figure this out for the past 24 hours. Seems like you need a Pandora's battery to downgrade to get Homebrew, and if you want a Pandora's battery you need to format the battery with a PSP with Homebrew already on it. Hmmmm... Confucius say conundrum.

Found this but you have to physically crack open your battery. Really hoping to avoid this but since I do not have access to another PSP with Homebrew already on it I think it is my only option.

I dunno, but buying a Datel tool battery sounds pretty fool-proof to me, if you're unwilling/unable to mod a battery yourself.
I wouldn't say Pandora-izing a battery is necessarily destroying a battery either, it's always wise to have one incase anything goes wrong, or you'd just like to be able to freely go from firmware to firmware.
Well you don't have to destroy the battery with a hard mod. (even though thats easy to do)
Technically it is reversible or you can install a switch.
But it is the hardest and if you not savvy with type of thing its best avoided.
Changing the serial number of the battery does not destroy it and it is reversible. (Although not a wise thing to do)
Like I said it also possible to use a Pandora battery as normal if you know who to further modify the boot processes on the memory stick.
You "could" run on AC power until you figure out how to modify you memory stick to dual boot.
Why not buy a Datel Battery TOOL?

A Pandora Battery is an extremely wise thing to own if you want custom firmware on your PSP.
The amount of time and agony you save if something goes wrong is well worth the investment.
Its the ultimate insurance.

That link will lead you to make a magic memory stick and a Pandora's Battery (although I HIGHLY suggest you just buy one). When it gets to the optional step of upgrading your firmware, go for m33 3.71-4 instead of 3.71-3,since the -4 version has less bugs in it. Also, I would highly suggest you not upgrade to anything after 3.71-4. Just stick with 3.71-4 as it runs PS games the best, and since all you want to do is emulate games, you won't need to upgrade your CFW at all. Need any help just PM me.
