A lot of you might have heard about this recently, or seen it places around the internet, but what is it and why is it so important?

Well, turns out this string of numbers (hex, which is why there are letters too) is the key to decrypting HD-DVDs. Not only that but the MPAA have claimed that simply spreading this number, posting it anywhere, writing it down, etc. is illegal. Pulling the same stunt that they did with the CSS code, but this time with just a number.

If they gain any ground with these actions, it will mark a huge loss of personal freedom on the internet, and nobody but them wants to see that.

    A banned number. What's next?

Do your part. Spread it around. On chalkboards, emails, forums, shout it from the rooftops, and make it known that the people will not stand for it.

I'm sorry if this isn't quite the typical article you see on the front page, and it probably belongs in our 'blogs' section. Frankly though, nobody reads that, so I'm going to do my part by making sure as many people see it as possible.

To tell you the truth lately there have been a lot of things posted in sections that probably shouldnt be. But it doesnt bother me at all and helps me see some other big news articles I probably wouldnt see cause I was not in the right section. Anyway this is definetly something that everybody should know, but must say its pretty much been on every site I goto already! Guess the news is spreading.

This is ridiculous...threatening to sue over a number. Sure, it's a decryption key but still. Here's a little skit I wrote...

Judge: The case of the MPAA versus www.ps3crap.com is now in session.
Judge: So let me get this straight...you're suing a website because they posted a number on their forums?
MPAA: Yes, your honor. But it's much more than that.
    Judge: Really? Please explain then.
MPAA: This number allows people to pirate HD-DVDs.
Judge: But can't a normal DVD be "pirated" by using a DVD Burner?
MPAA: Yes, but this is different. This is causing us to lose money!
Judge: So you want to sue this website for $3000 because they posted a "number" that is making you lose money?
    MPAA: Yes.
Judge: Have you ever read the constitution?
    MPAA: Bits and pieces...
Judge: Then you should know that it is completely legal to say or write anything you wish. This "trial" is a joke. I'm awarding the defendant $200 for the money he had to waste on court costs. If you ever pull something this stupid again, I will have your ass. Also, get the hell out of my courtroom!

Add a few 0s to the ends of those to get realisitc numbers. Also, the bigger root problem is that the DMCA is so vague and broken that it actually would allow them to legitimately sue for this.
