General games PS4, Xbox 720 could fail because of OnLive - Pachter

OnLive, the cloud based gaming platform, could cause next-gen consoles to fail in years to come if it can provide a similar level of quality.

That's according to Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter who spoke to IncGamers about the potential of OnLive and the effect it could have on consoles such as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 in the next four or five years.

"I'm not sure where OnLive will be by then," he said.

"If they can deliver a similar 3D/virtual reality experience (to Move and Kinect), we may not see new consoles succeed."

We'll put our money on Microsoft and Sony pulling through just fine.

Although OnLive does look like it will be able to compete on some level with the likes of Mass Effect 2 being listed as launch titles, Sony made it clear there was no threat to consoles from the service earlier this year.

OnLive's pricing might be the biggest stumbling block.

    And there it is.

some of the games on OnLive are full retail price (or damn close), with "At a minimum, all current games will be supported for 3 years after their release on the OnLive Service.", and even then if, and only if, the associated monthly subscription is kept current.

A rough analogy would be Sony or Microsoft sending two guys to your house to confiscate your shelf full of games if you dare let your Live or PSN+ lapse.
