The iPhone / iPod touch will probably be a great system for puzzle games (picross clone anyone?). But I'm unsure how playable other types of games will be. I really prefer the feel of a real button over a virtual button on the touchscreen any day.
You don't NEED buttons, although it would be far more useful, besides the Wii isn't a touch screen, completely different aspects, touch screens are by far easier to emulate buttons. The wii requires a much more precise and large movement so it is only logical to have buttons

The lack of [physical] buttons is the iPhone's only flaw in the homebrew scene.
iphone is a handheld computer
ds is a handheld game console
psp is a multimedia handheld game console
iphone costs $600+
ds $130
psp $170
thats my opinion. DON'T COMPARE APPLES WITH BRICK WALLS!
i got my GBA a year before the ds came out. it was used and i payed $40! lol
i think the iphone could be interesting if they dont release a second generation iphone in the next 5 min. like they do the ipod. lol
i dread to think of their advertising campaign:
"hi, i'm a iPone..." "... and i'm a DS"
