ps3 newby help

hi, i am gonna buy a ps3 but i've got a few questions please.

Are all ps3 region free for games iregardless of where i bought it.

is there any benefit other than cost of buying one form the us (i live in france)

if i buy one from the us will it only play certain region dvds and blu ray?

It's region free for the games, but will not play movies from other regions.
