AFAIK the Slot 2 expansions for the real or the EZ 3-in-1 do use up more energy than when you just have the slot-2 thing inserted that came with your DS.

That would be correct. You have more power draw from the components on a slot-2 device than you do on the dust covers that come with the DS. The dust cover is just a PCB with leads that trace back to the connections. No chips or fuses or anything else on it.
