Default connecting to PC with PSP USB

For some reason, when I connect my PSP to my PC with the USB cable, it won't show up on "my computer". When it asks me to install it, I choose yes, etc but since it has no installation CD, I just assume that the PSP has some installation files on it and let it do it automatically. Unfortunately, my PC does not find anything, and the installation fails every time I try again.

My memory stick works fine though, but I was woried about the USB problem since it seems I need it to downgrade my 2.0 psp to 1.5 (I also upgraded my psp from 1.52 to 2.0, thinking that that would solve the problem) to run homebrew.

Please help me figure out what is the solution. Thanks in advance.

Are you using WinXP or still using Win98?
But anyway have you tried to install other usb devices on the same usb port, just to check that its working correctly?
