PSPMail Checker?

does anyone know if its possible to write homebrew that would query a pop3 or smtp srv to see how many unread messages were available? ...or even read them? ...or is there an app that i havent found yet?

NOTE: It's very much a work-in-progress, but it works.
Also, POP3 is the server you pull your mail FROM, and SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is what you would use to send mail OUT. Two different services, usually running on the same server, but can be split to run on two different servers.
