I read that Georgia attacked pro-Moscow villages in South Ossettia which provoked Russia to attack Georgia.
But, as far as I am aware this is Georgia attacking Georgia.
Russia shouldn't get involved, whether these villages are pro-Moscow or not. It would be like Germany getting involved if Belgium started attacking it's own.
Personally, I believe it has more to do with the oil pipeline that runs through that part of Georgia, which was paid for by the US. This means that Georgia have no need to look to Russia for distribution.
