it's not an easy mod, you will definately need to redesign the case. You have two options: use a long FFC to connect the laser and extend the other wires, or use an IDE cable to extend the entire GD-ROM assemblies connection to the mobo, the second method allows you to have an external GD-ROM so you could keep the DC case the same.
That's the easy bit, the hardest bit is making a mechanism that works well enough to be reliable, when i did this i hacked a CD-ROM drive apart and fitted the DC laser assembly inside mounted on the old laser housing. This didnt work very well, i would recommend finding a CD-ROM with a laser assemblt that would work with the DC, they are quite common as the DC laser is a standard CD laser, only the circuitry is specific to Dreamcast.
