Cnet have rated the top 10 Gadgets of 2005 and the PSP comes in at #1 with the Xbox 360 at #2, heres what they wrote:

I dunno about that man. Most people still don't know anything about unlocking the potential of their portable. Even my friends stick to playing retail games, watching UMD movies, and listening to music. Even without the homebrew, the PSP is still a pretty kick ass system.
