There is a verison of the downgrader which does brick a PSP when used. The one that works should come direct from SonyXteam 's site.

the MPH Downgrader works perfectly. dont be folled by the fake downgrader. the virus in the faker is somthing like "Trojan.PSPBrick" or somthin. i used MPH Downgrader with my v2.00 when it first came out and im like WOOTYEAH *backflip!!!*

The reason it picks it up as a virus is because there was a PSP virus made to look exactly like the downgrader so a) people will brick their psps and b) to confuse people. If you got it off of MPH or SXT directly, it will be fine.
You don't need to know my mental status. You probably don't want to, either.
